Re: [Whitley_project] askill county donegal whitley crash site

Oops!  I think you have emailed the wrong person... The crash site I'm looking for is on Wuan Garno hill, Wales.
I am quite jealous though... there are no WW2 wreckages in the vicinity of Vancouver, Canada. I would love to make it over to the U.K to discover remains.

Thank-you,

Todd Yates

Subject: [Whitley_project] askill county donegal whitley crash site

Hi all,
I was in the vicinity of the crash site at Askill in Donegal, Ireland
recently. It is a remote area with only a few houses on a very narrow
road in the country side. I was looking for the site when I met an
old lady nearby. I asked her about her memories and she said that she
remembers the story her parents told her of the crash. She said that
a member of the crew bailed out and landed close by. I would assume
therefore that the plane remained intact until the impact with the
ground. She pointed me in the direction of the crash site. Whilst I
was unable to access the field I would suggest that it was between
1/3 and 1/2 a mile from lough melvin. This would probably mean that
none of the aircraft remains in the lake and probably nothing was
located there in the first place. I haven't had a chance to review
the relevant file in the Irish military archives but may do so at the
next available opportunity. The old lady brought me to a hedge row
and showed me a tube about 4 feet long and 4 inches in diameter which
she said came from the aircraft. I was unable to identify it as part
of an aircraft.

regards,
