Road Tyres & re-packing end can?   Message List

Re: [XRV_List] Road Tyres & re-packing end can?

Road tyres for better mileage? I've never managed to buy road tyres
that came with as much tread, or have worn slower, than the
Metzler Tourance I have on the AT. That's not a fair test really, as
I've only fitted road tyres to bikes with at least 50% more power than
an Africa Twin;-) Generally though I'd expect road tyre to have less
tread to start with, and lose it faster.

Not sure you'll get a decent road tyre for an AT though. Bikes like a
BMW GS have 19" front wheels and can get road tyres, but the AT has a
21" front wheel. I've heard of plenty of BMW owners who says you can
fit road tyres (though most like Tourances too) but never heard of an AT
owner who has found a decent road tyre fitment. You may find you can
only get stuff designed for dodgy bikes like Hardly Ablesons, or
dreadf^H^H^H^H^H^H classic bikes. Avon Venoms perhaps?

If you can get proper road tyres they might give more grip, but then if
you crash through lack of grip, will it be through pushing a tyre too
far on decent tarmac, or by falling off on oil, diesel, gravel or cow
sh*t? The latter seems like the bigger risk to me, and I guess that a
grippy road tyre is no more use on gravel than a dual purpose tyre.

If this isn't what you've wanted to hear, don't worry, there'll be some
nutter along in a minute who's grafted a pair of CBR wheels and brakes
on to an XRV, slotted in a VTR1000 motor, and goes hunting Fireblades on
track days;-)
