Hi,

sorry think you have the wrong end of the stick and have gone to a lot of trouble that I hope is of use to others.
I have the manual, the trip meter was working just not very well. Seems it had some dodgy connections at the junction box behind it. Now all is clean it seems ok.

Yes I have the same problem.

Honda even replaced it under warranty some years ago then the new one stopped working
as well.

If you disconnect the battery mine will work for a while then stops just like yours.

Very annoying as the trip is good for seeing how far into a tank of people you are.

Mine still works, David (1992 RD04); but don't ever use vaseline to
protect the clear surface of the trip meter. I did, to protect it
from the intense Aussie sun (we have an entirely different light
source than the rest of the planet, you know... .) Anyway, the
crazing which occurred now obscures nearly all the readings, so it
might just as well NOT work!

Hi,

My digital Trip Meter has decided not to play anymore.
It has power, the clock works, I disconnected the battery to try a
reset; but basically it will show about a total of 4 miles on a 40 mile
journey so suspect it is not picking up the data it needs at the
required rate.
So question is where is the sensor? So I can possibly clean it?
Anybody had a similar fault or any good ideas......buy a new one!!??

Hi

I'm planning to buy new tyres for my BMWK100LT (1988)! The dimensions are:

front Metzeler : 100/90/V 18(56)

Rear Metzeler: 130/90/ 17 68V

A Metzel distributor have another dimensions to offer:

front: 110/80 18 56V

Rear: 140/80 17 89V

The question is are these tyres uitable in spitet of some differences in dimension? Can they affect the bike's driving?

Hello all,
I am looking for a LASER race can and connector pipe
for my RD03. They have been out of production for
quite some time and I cannot find one anywhere. They
are made of pure unobtainium! I had sort of quit
looking as I was getting no where, but thought I might
ask again.
Anyone have or know where I might find such a piece?
Thanks
Terry

The wiki is attached to my site www.xrv.org.uk, if you post on the forums we have a few US members there.
While we're on the Wiki subject though we really want to make the Wiki the definitive source for Africa Twin information so please please pop by register on the wiki and edit away and add content to your hearts content. Share all that knowledge that you have as it will then benefit future AT owners. We're also covering the TA, Varadero, and Dominator as well.
Thanks all.
Dave.

Hey Gary,
I have a 89 RD03 that I purchased in Florida about 5
yrs ago. I got so lucky and bought it over the phone
sight unseen. I have seen only one other, but know
through this list and the atic list that there are few
others here in the states. You just missed out on a
new in the crate 03 model with california title for
12k I think. Very difficult to find one like that.
They are hard to find because there are so few here
and they dont go up for sale very often.
You will have to be pacient and wait for one to come
up for sale and then be prepared to pay the premium.
Best of luck
Terry

Hi Garry... and Kolya,

I also own a '91 Africa Twin (RD04)... and owned another (1990 RD04)
last year, while travelling through Western Europe for four months.
I sold the 1990 AT in N. Holland... .

I've also been trying to buy an Africa Twin, to cross Canada in 2007.
I've only found one AT in North America so far... in Kentucky... and
while it's a late model RD07 in great condition, the owner wants big
bucks for it, especially once I convert Oz dollars to US bucks.

Good luck. I've crossed Australia on mine. Brilliant tourers
and amazing workhorses.

Best of luck,

That sounds like it may be the ignition control unit (ICU which may be the same thing as CDI?). I have the same problem with my RD04 and discovered that sometime in its dark past my bike had its ICU opened and soldered. Major misfires going on right now. Trying to order new from www.wemoto.com

Hi,

I need an engine for a 1999 AT. Can anyone tell me if the engine or
the way it slots in has changed over the years. Would a 1993 engine
fit in a 1999 bike for example?

Cheers,

Ben.

Yes African Queens used to do a kit, but I think when someone on www.xrv.org.uk last enquired they said that they weren't stocking it any more as there wasn't any demand for it. I guess that means that they'd have to pull it together specially.
I would question going this route though as I wouldn't have thought it would be worth the expense to do this.
It has been discussed on the xrv forums though so perhaps worth a trawl through there.
Cheers
Dave.

G'day Mike,

ATs were never sold here... and are becoming rarer worldwide...
not because they break down, but due to natural attrition,
particularly when crashed at high speed in central Australia.

We plan to cross Canada next year, so when I saw the AT/Canada
reference, I touched base. I currently get all my parts ex-Singapore
and from NZ. I'll be in NZ in three months, so I'm pretty much OK.
(I have been trying to buy both a 90 and 96 model there, BTW.)

Cheers,

Paul,
Margaret River, WA
(We have a lot of RTW riders stay here, BTW. We've ten acres
in the forest, with a couple of homes, orchards, creek, etc.)
