LONDON POOLS CAMPAIGN - FUNDING AND MEETING
It looks as if we have secured some corporate sponsorship for the London Pools Campaign - which is very good as we were turned down for the Awards for All Funding. This should mean having office space and providing some support to the campaigns. We are setting up a meeting for early March - if you would like to come along - can you let me know if you are available March 3rd, 4th, 11th, 17th or 18th in the evening - venue to be confirmed (but will be central London).
PHOTO EXHIBITION
Our plans for a photo exhibition of the state of London's Pools are coming along. We have photos of the swimmers in Charlton Lido jumping in the water from the snowy pool side, the squatted London Fields lido, the ruins of Poplar Baths and the overgrown Eltham Lido. If you can help us with access to one of the pools who's future is not secure - please get in touch. We also need a venue for the exhibition - any ideas?
CRYSTAL PALACE
Sport England has agreed to give Crystal Palace £5.5m of national lottery funding over the next two years to keep the National Sports Centre open and avoid damaging London's 2012 Olympic bid. Bromley Council was to resume ownership of the south London complex when Sport England's 35-year lease ended last March but has continually warned that it cannot afford to maintain it or pay for its programme of modernisation.
CLISSOLD LEISURE CENTRE
Clissold Leisure Centre in Hackney has closed indefinitely - after costing about £30 million to build (part from Sport England) and being open just 22 months. Hackney Council say they will not pay to fix it, and have not identified where the funds will come from. Local MP Diane Abbott is asking for a public enquiry.
ILFORD AND FULWELL CROSS LEISURE CENTRES
YORK HALL BATHS
Campaigners to stop the closure of York Hall have been part of a long consultation process with Tower Hamlets Council - which has put forward 2 schemes which would each cost more than £13 million. The council is in the process of contracting out all its leisure services.
PARLIAMENT HILL LIDO
Swimmers at Parliament Hill Lido - who oppose Camden Council's plans to make the pool shallower and remove the diving boards - are taking the planning decision to judicial review.
GOVERNMENT SCHOOL SWIMMING CHARTER
The government launched a new charter to help all children learn to swim safely - with the help of swimming champion Duncan Goodhew. They say "the Charter gives practical advice to schools and local authorities on planning and organising swimming lessons, with guidance on encouraging more children to take part". SWIM CHIEF SAYS UK HAS THIRD WORLD FACILITIES
British swimming's boss has criticised the UK's "third world facilities" in the build-up to the 2004 Olympics. National performance director Bill Sweetenham also accused businesses and local authorities of a "parasitical approach" to charges for swimmers.
