York Hall Turkish Baths Refurbishment - June 06 Update   Message List

Re: [Yorkhall] Re: York Hall Turkish Baths Refurbishment - June 06 Update

Yup - I guess the new age marketeers were involved in the total  desecration and rebuild of the once 450 year old Rudos and Rac Turkish Baths in Budapest. Modernised, wrecked and ruined to create an 'experience.'
And Bath - forget that place - it is only catering for American tourists - with prices to match. For the millions of pounds watsed on the 'renovation' they could also have restored the Roman Baths for use again - but they didn't. I suppose Roman Baths don't fit into the concept of a modern all glass 'health spa.' I hear the local vandals have an attitude towards the new baths - they keep breaking the glass panels!!

I also hear that 'they' are also 'renovating' Porchester Hall - I don't think Cannons / Courtneys are that interested in it - so goodness knows what 'experience' they will be marketing now, and at what prices.

Then there was Lewisham - gone forever. I suppose it didn't fit into any marketing scheme at all and had to go.

Hopefully they'll leave Ironmonger Row alone - but what's the betting they wont.

Bad solutions. Create an 'experience'. Spoil a good thing by adding
things that new age bookshops think are trendy, but will alienate
the existing users. Spoil a good thing by adding facilities ending
in the word 'therapy'. 'Hydrotherapy, Aromatherapy, Newageotherapy.'

Frankly if there is a marketing department involved, then hang up
your towels.  They will change things in order to 'attract new
users', create 'synergies with the existing and new clientelle to
create a comfortable multi-user environment' etc. etc.  It will not
be what we want.  They will throw away 2000 years of Bathing history
(Roman then Turkish) to 'cater to the modern market'.
Look what they have done in Bath
http://www.thermaebathspa.com/spafacilities/  This is not what a
Turkish Bath is about!

I could be(and hope) I am entirely wrong, and Yorkhall will open
with its tradition intact.

Apparently what she describes as the 'experience facility'
(it's 'the Turkish Baths, but with more facilities' apparently), are
now destined to reopen in late February. What makes me think it
won't?
