York Hall, venue to some of the country’s most famous boxing bouts,
is set to become home to another type of spa-ring as work on a state-
of-the-art health facility continues.

The fantastic £1.2 million facility called Spa London is a joint
project between Tower Hamlets Council and Greenwich Leisure Limited
(GLL). Residents will be able to benefit from a whole host of
treatments and therapies as they relax and unwind at the country’s
finest public sector spa which is scheduled to open in Spring 2007.

Councillor Lutfur Rahman, Lead Member, Culture, Tower Hamlets
Council said: "Tower Hamlets Council is working hard to provide top
quality leisure facilities to the borough’s residents and Spa London
will be a wonderful addition. We’re delighted to deliver one of the
UK’s first public sector spa and believe that it will set the
standard for others to follow.

“This fabulous new facility will breathe new life into a historic
building in addition to introducing the benefits of a spa to all
members of the community.”

Spa London will be sited within the historic Victorian baths at York
Hall Leisure Centre in Bethnal Green. Visitors will be able to enjoy
a full thermal experience including, steam room, sauna and
relaxation zone. Four treatment rooms will provide a comprehensive
range of beauty treatments from leading international brands such as
Thalgo, Jane Iredale and Jessica all at affordable prices.

Alex Smith, Spa Manager for Spa London, is former Spa Manager at the
five star Old Course Hotel in St Andrews.

Alex said, “Spa London will offer visitors the ultimate day spa
experience. We will be combining traditional thermal treatments with
the latest modern therapies. The environment will be luxurious and
relaxing …quot; providing the perfect escape from the stresses and
strains of day-to-day living.”

Designed by Mark Cotton of Architecture and Design Services Ltd, the
project embraces the historic features of the building whilst
providing a contemporary facility in a relaxing and serene
environment.

Paul Martindill, Acting Head of Cultural Services at Tower Hamlets
Council said: “Spa London will assist in attracting more women and
older people to York Hall, contributing to healthy living in the
borough.”

York Hall Leisure Centre has recently undergone a series of vital
modernisation works. The £4.2 million facelift has already seen a
state-of-the-art gymnasium that doubled the size of the previous gym
area, a revitalised reception area that enhances the buildings
original features and a refurbished pool, including new changing
rooms.
