As the someone who posted the original item I should say that being muslim or not is  not an issue, despite what you might read in the tabloids. Behaving with respect is expected of course, and as in all mixed communities you will tend to find some people who are more comfortable staying  within their group, be it muslim, western,  french straight,  parisian gay, american tourist , football players etc etc and some people who are more open to meeting people from other backgrounds.

A few months ago someone mentioned experiencing the authentic Turkish Bath or Islamic Hammam next to the Mosque in Paris. I questioned the safety of westerners going there bearing in mind that westerners are not the most preferred of peole amongst Muslims right now. But no-one replied.
