Re: [a40farina] New Toy

Hi Rob
You  will find the fuel pump to the right of the spare wheel(open boot and undo the two fasteners with large screwdriver or 10p coin ,lift floor and all should be revealed). The pump is electric (SU)and maybe the points are sticky.Try giving it a thump and if it starts ticking it is working if not further investigation req.d.
Clutch Hydraulics .fill the master cyl and pump the pedal. If you get a decent operation bleeding might sort it out.If you need more info just ask as an o/haul of system may be needed.
Brakes really need investigating by drum removal and checking operation of wheel cyls also to check for hyd leaks.O/haul poss.needed
Rad hose not a problem available from club ,top hose same as Morris 1000 ,bottom hose same as A35.
Whereabouts are you.If you can, find a local member to assist you ,failing that I am more than willing to help.
                Regards
                         Mike.H.

Subject: [a40farina] New Toy

Hello everyone my name is Rob, I have just bought an 1965 Austin A40
Farina MK2 De Luxe.  It is in good condition but has been laid up for
about five years.  Obviously the battery was knackered so I fitted a
new one and changed oil and plugs, I also cleaned the points and there
apears to be a healthy spark.  The car turns over on the key and all
the electrics seem to work.  It has covered 69,000 miles and was
serviced at 63,000 before it was laid up. It belonged to an old lady
from new who had a stroke and died and I bought it from her nephew.
Now to the problems,
It doesn't start as I have said there apears to be a spark but I think
the problem is fuel as I checked the carb float bowl and that is dry.
I have read that the fuel pump is on the side of the engine but I
haven't been able to find it, what is it near, please be patient I am
used to newer cars.
The clutch doesn't work I checked the fluid reseviour and that seems
suspiously low, what is my first port of call, bleed the system? if so
how do I go about that.
The cooling system was dry also so I refilled it to discover that the
bottom radiator hose is perished and leaking so hopfully that just
needs a new hose although it is an odd looking thing with a take off
for the heater built into it.  I would be grateful if anyone could
point me towards a supplier of these hoses.
Added to this the brakes were jammed on, I managed to free them a
little or enough to move the car by winding it forward and backward on
the starting handle but the peddle feels very hard.

Oh and I will get my membership application to the A40 farina owners
club in the post today.

Any advice would be gratefully received

There are some pictures of the car here
