A REMINDER.

Dear All,

The CENTRE FOR LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND LEARNING
INVITES YOU TO THE TALK OF

DR DINAH VOLK
Monday 9 November 2009, 6:00 pm (Refreshments at 5:30)
Top Floor, Education Building Goldsmiths,
University of London
New Cross, London SE14 6NW

"Contradictions, clashes, cominglings…tensions and richness":
An Exploration of Syncretic Literacy

This presentation will explore the "contradictions, clashes,
cominglings…tensions and richness" in syncretism and syncretic literacy,
examining the history of the concepts, their current use in educational
research, critiques, and Syncretic Literacy Studies. Examples of syncretic
literacy artifacts co-constructed in bilingual, cross-cultural settings by
children and family members will be used to illustrate the concepts being
explored and the relevance of language ideologies. The audience will be
invited to participate in discussing theoretical extensions and pedagogical
applications of the concepts.

Dr. Dinah Volk is Professor of Early Childhood Education, College of
Education, Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. She has worked
as a teacher of young children in the U.S. and Latin America. Her interests
include the languages and literacies of young bilingual children, family
involvement in young children's learning with a special interest in sibling
teaching, and culturally responsive pedagogy. She is now conducting a study
of children in an ESL (English as a Second Language) first grade and their
literacy interactions at home and in community settings. She is the
co-editor with Eve Gregory and Susie Long of Many Pathways to Literacy:
Young Children Learning with Siblings, Peers, Grandparents, and
Communities. Her work has been published in the Early Childhood Research
Quarterly, the Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, Literacy, Young
Children, Research in the Teaching of English, Anthropology and Education
Quarterly, and the Journal of Language, Identity, and Education.

We would greatly appreciate it if you could print and display the poster in
your institution.

Many thanks,

Professor Eve Gregory and Dr Charmian Kenner
