To keep my database of UK & Ireland Airfields Past & Present up to date, I would appreciate any assistance in obtaining precise locations for the following Strips.
Recently I have been hearing more and more of various
farmers/operators that their phone numbers have been given out on the
internet which they had specifically NOT wanted and in a number of
cases they had actually told people not to pass on the contact details.
In light of this I have decided to only put on telephone numbers and/
or e-mail if the operator is happy for this to be done.
Best wishes and regards, Richey.
PS Did I just lose a second member since starting in April 2006??? I
swear I had 83 a few days ago..... oh well.. maybe they were just
interested in the north of England... it is a shame because I cant do
all the extra work involved

I have just set up a new forum for the sale or purchase of any aviation related memorabilia or paraphernalia that you may wish to trade.
It would be of special interest for the sale or purchase of items such as aviation books, periodicals and magazines, photo's, maps, drawings, etc.
The forum is open to any aviation enthusiast.
At this stage only individual postings will be accepted but I will look into the later possibility of accepting commercial postings from known sources.
With the interest already expressed I'm sure it will not take too long to be a worthwhile forum
I have already received a tremendous response from my list of books for sale, to which I will have to respond in date & time order, so please bear with me.
Due to the response, I realised that what may be purposeful is a forum or website to sell specifically aviation related items to include such as Books, Photo's, Maps, or any aviation paraphernalia.
Suggestions would be appreciated if this could be acheived either through an individual forum or through an organisation such as Air Britain
I am considering selling my collection of airfield related books.
The list of titles is as below
Please contact me if you are interested in any of the titles.

I have made a couple of updates to the Kent file.
A special request: I dont want to rely on Air Britain, LAAS and Osprey
mags/groups to find info, (possibly also the impending? new edition of
AIRBASE UK??); if anyone has news about any local airstrip or other
strips elsewhere could they kindly please let me know.
I try to keep the files as up-to-date as possible, but I am now well
behind with using the info from the above publications which I
gratefully acknowledge.
Fuller details of my recent travels which I have been able to do will
be appearing over the next couple of months in the LAAS mag via David
Seex who is speedily becoming (just like Don Eaves editor of 'Osprey'
mag)someone whom I much admire in their dedication to the air
enthusiast hobby; thankyou gents.......
I look forward to the day there will be a dedicated enthusiast/spotter
centre somewhere close enough to Heathrow; keep praying folks!!!!
All the best. Richey.
Appologies for the absence, I will not be posting much in the future
due to ill health and concentration problems. I don't know how far this
site will go as no one has come forward to do the rest of the UK and it
is completely beyond me to do so much, again. I shall keep updating the
files and you can see new additions/corrections/updates on the Devon,
Surrey and Sussex files.
I warmly welcome the recent new members and send regards and best
wishes to them and all other members. Let's hope we continue to get a
better summer than last year!
I will be posting a special message soon, to do with trying to get at
least one aviation-minded person to be one of two drivers for my
Motability car, and I hope this will lead to some trips out and about
strip hunting... the car costs are already covered, except fuel which
will be shared by the driver passenger/s, but private use fuel will be
paid for by the driver. More soon...
All the best, Richey.
PS the car is stuck in the Vauxhall dealer in Bristol as I and my wife
don't/can't drive !!

Hi Martin, can you give me the page number in ABN 8/06 for the
Almondbury details?/
Locations: Charterhouse- Smalls Farm: co-ords 51.17.21N/002.43.16W
and is all the field south of the two hangars. The MW fly-in and AGM
is held here every first week-end in August; the next field south has
also been used in the past.
Painscastle- Lane Farm:52.06.55N/03.11.50W ; postcode LD2 3JS ;
John Bally 01497-851605.
Kington: no strip known of, just a collection of microlights of MJ
Aubrey.
Knook : is actually Chitterne/Knook- QUEBEC Farm at
51.11.28N/002.03.35W.
West Tisted- ? Farm is at 51.02.49N/001.43.29W
Best wishes , Richey.
Martin
Smalls Farm, Charterhouse can be found at Grid Ref ST 499 546. It is
also known as Warren Farm and also as Mendip Forest. If you look at
the aerial photo on Google Maps you will see two small T-hangars.
Until recently Ashcroft Farm, Winsford was shown in the AFE Flight
Guide.

I currently use multimap for many of my locations for my databases, as it gives both grid references and Lat/Long's as well as most arial views.
The conversion from grid ref. to Lat/Long is fairly Accurate.
I have come across various internet mapping sites like :
Easymap, Getamap, Getmapping, Google Earth, Mapquest, Streetmap, Yahoo Maps.
Are there any others that you would recommend, that give either excellent ariel views, or grid references or Lat / Long's especially with high definition or large scale.
Richard,
I think you may be correct in saying that the Kings Caple site
is not an airstrip. If you look closely at Google you will see
at 380m from the SW end there is a hedge line crossing the track.
The hedge on the northern side is too close and too high to allow
safe passage of any aircraft.
however the narrow strip would not be a problem for most microlight
pilots. My closest airstrip is Letterkenny Co Donegal Ireland and
they operate out of a tarmac strip which is only 3m wide.
Hugo.

Hugo and others have kindly pointed out that the Kings Caple site
may well not be a strip as it is quite narrow, however I have sometimes
been told by UL/weight shift pilots that they have landed on strips
less than ten feet wide especially if the grass/agriculture is not high
enough to interfere with their wings....
The strip at Townsend Farm at Waterperry is most definitely NOT
Parsons Farm which is 1.5 miles NW of the village, whereas as I said,
Townsend is located on the immediate NW side of the village with the
strip west end butting onto the motorway!
OK: another real one... whilst still trying to locate the base of a
Jodel given as 'Torbay' I was using Multimap old site when I suddenly
caught sight of a blue light a/c and what turned out to be a weight
shift micro both on the ground at Marldon near Torquay. On looking at
the Google Earth site I can see what looks like a runway in a well
trimmed small field, though the aircraft were not in the picture so I
suspect the strip has been there for some years!! The co-ordinates are
map ref 860636 just over half way between the Marldon churches and the
hamlet of Aptor.

1000m long but VERY narrow at only 4m

No luck with that one

Possible site for Titsey is just S of and parallel to the M25 W of
Water Lane at 51.16-04.49N 00.00-10.00E 385amsl. 580m long at the
top of a triangular shaped field.

Hugo.
Welcome to new members and sorry for not posting recently.. health is
not on my side currently....
A couple of new strips I've found on Google Earth:
KINGS CAPLE- Aramstone Farm (?) half mile north of Kings Caple in
Herefordshire; looks like a very long strip to me.
WATERPERRY- Townsend Farm. just on the north-west side of Waterperry
village butting onto the motorway.
I've got anothewr couple so I'll be putting them on hopefully over
the next week or so.
REQUEST: anyone got an exact location for Astwood Bank on
Worcs/Warwick border and the Titsey strip in Surrey.
Very Best Wishes and regards. Richey Ward.
Does anyone have anything at all about this location....

There is a strip at THRUXTON - LAINS FARM, Hampshire. The strip is on
the opposite side (south) of the A303 running past Thruxton airfield
and on the junction of the turn-off to Quarley. It is clearly visible
on Google Maps with a single-engine parked by the hangar / taxiway.
From the map it looks quite a neat and tidy strip!!!

Hi folks, a short message to welcome recent members who I may have
missed.
I have recently added BROMHAM- Oaks Farm, and today found a strip at
COLLINGBOURNE DUCIS/CADLEY- Herridge Stud Farm where on Google Earth
you can see a Pa30 or 31 twin parked or maybe lining up.... I suspect
though that the strip is on the west side of the sole building in the
middle of the same field....
Just in case I'm not back before the year end, I'll wish you all a
Merry Xmas and healthy, wealthy New Year.
( I'm currently struggling with my first and prob only chrissie pressie
the new Jet Liners book from Air Britain; after I've done transferring
over, I've got 6 years of sightings to add in, my old book being the
1988 edition; and I've already found a host of mistakes/exclusions...!!)
All the best, Richey.

Hi Trevor, been following your recent travels...
On Thurs 18th I updated the Kent file and noticed I had missed out
FRINSTED/RINGLESTONE- ? Farm ; I wonder if maybe Martin has got the
farm name??? Cheers, Richey.
PS, I see the 550yd strip at SHILLINGFORD- Bremridge Farm (Devon)
is now showing on Google Earth- that's another confirmation for me.
I meant that Lower Halstow is on the other side of SITTINGBOURNE just
about the same distance... I'm pretty sure the lady had an Auster based
at Orchard Farm... Richey.

Hmmmmmm, cheers Martin, that name rings a bell: was she based at the
Orchard Farm on the other side of Gillingham at Lower Halstow??
Richey.
