A very good day to you, {even if it ain't !}
This lovely little car, ...just exactly when does it backfire? Only after a
mile, or only after shutting off for a while, or just downhill, or some other
scanario? Does the exhaust smell of unburnt fuel? Does it only cut out when
turning the steering in a particular direction? Do you know if the valve
clearance is correct, 'cos this has caused many a mystery. The fuel filter
suggestion by Martin is probably right on the nail, but if there is no result
when replaced etc, then be very specific about checking these other things. A
fair while back someone else had a similar problem and traced it to a connector
block behind the steering column being stretched every time the car was turned
in a certain direction! This intermittantly disconnected the ign, switch, causing
it to die. Might help, might not? Let us all know. Someone will come up with the
cure.
Best regards. BJ.

Okay, heres another idea.Have you changed the fuel filter? I once bought a
very snazzy Mitsubishi Sapparo Sports car for a mere £400 quid because it
ran badly and lacked power – it exhibited similar symptoms to your Virgo. A
49pence fuel filter (this was 20 years ago!) cured the problem and I had
almost three eyars out of the car before selling it on for more than I had
paid for it! Happy days!

Martin

thanks for reply Martin, the problem seems to happen when i have gone
downhill off throttle and back on i.e. turned corner or back on flat
road,top/ bottom of hill even when engine is still quite cold i had a quick
look for any heat transfer near carb etc and i noticed water pipe near
petrol pipe and moved but didn't help unfortunately any other ideas welcome
,thanks

Is your Virgp Petrol or Diesel. This sounds like a classic case of petrol
evaporation to me - hence it runs until the engine gets hot, then the petrol
starts to vaporise before it reaches the combustion chamber. If that's the
case check the routing of the petrol supply pipes and if possible re-route
uit away from any obvious heat sources or consider foil back insulation
where you can't. Just my five pennorth.
