Because of some young pillock in a van backing into my aixam at some
speed its been written off. After all the hard work of rebuilding the
gearbox and drive pulleys it is no moor. I feel lost without my little
gold friend and even though it was sometimes a pain I do miss the
heater and I aint getting any younger. Its been bloody cold going to
work on my trike. The good news is I'm getting a new crossline that
will be I hope easier for even the biggest moron to see.I have had to
trade my 1500 wing and some cash for it. At least I will still have my
trike to ride if we get any summer. I will let you know how I get on
with the crossline. Has anyone on here got one and what do you think
of it.

Hi Guys and Gals

Whilst idly Googling this evening I came across this website -

http://bildepan.frontosa.se/shop/Default.aspx

Click on the model you require, and you will get a list of categories
with the diagrams and part numbers - and it's in ENGLISH for a change.

Graham

ps. Thanks to JJ for his brilliant webpage on fixing the little

Excellent work JJ, I have signed it and we can live in hope.
I tried writing to the DVLA and the Treasury last year. It is not only
the tax issue that concerns me but also that any future draconian
anti-car measures they throw at us in the name of being 'green' might
throw our babies out with the proverbial bathwater as well. This is
what I said:-

I own a small and very 'green' car but it is not officially recognised
as such. It does not therefore feature in any current and future
government thinking or concessions.

So how green is it? Well at present it's emissions aren't even tested
at MOT (the fee is just as much, though). Despite that, the engine is
small and is also used in truck refrigerators, marine generators and
military APU's so luckily there is data out there.

It has a 500cc diesel that uses 0.22 gallons/hr at max. RPM and no
load, rising to 0.43GPH at full load - so on the road, we can assume
it is somewhere around the highest figure. In that condition, it was
then found to emit 10.13 grammes of NOx per hour and 2199 grammes of
CO2. It does 100KM/H (60 MPH) flat out, so if we take my normal 80KM/H
(50MPH) cruising speed, that gives about 28G/KM CO2 and 0.12G/KM
(that's 4 or 5 times less CO2 than a new Corsa)

You will also notice that it would give me about 115 MPG! Well my
experience over 55000 miles is 'only' 95-103MPG. The manufacturers
ultra-conservative estimate is 'over 80' but if I ever get consumption
that bad I find and rectify slightly sticking brakes (or dirty filters).

Even if we degrade the above emissions figures by 15% or so the
results are still stunning are they not? They also assume no biodiesel
- but I use that whenever available. By the way it is an Aixam 500SL

So then, what (from the 'official' point of view) is preventing it
from being regarded as eco-friendly? - well apparently two
not-very-sensible reasons actually.

(1) Age - It was first registered 5 months too soon. How silly! If we
were talking about some kind of new penalty then a cutoff 'not before'
date would be fair - but not with a benefit surely? For this issue it
should be simple to allow owners of older vehicles to volunteer for
emissions testing, reap any benefits in tax and/or take any penalties
should age or neglect ever cause the 'greenness' to disappear.
(Remember that continually buying a new car would be less green also).

(2) Type of vehicle - Apparently it is too light so it ain't a car but
a quadricycle: so what? If it is 'green' then surely it is 'green' - I
can't see why this is a problem. I also own a scooter, that is
regarded as very 'green' but it only does between 65 and 80 MPG on
petrol so guess which vehicle is actually better for the planet?

For sub - 30 mile commutes away from public transport things like this
are ideal and should be included and encouraged by any government or
policy body that is genuine about 'green' issues. I am dissapointed
that it has so far been ignored. Contacts like this one have usually
just received some kind of facile stock reply designed to make us 'go
away'.

Well the DVLA chap just recited the present rules to me like a machine
and the Treasury chap (after a whole month) said (when translated into
'earthling speak') 'We would have to push some buttons on our computer
- we can't be bothered - and even if we did how could we cope with the
money we would lose'

I have had the opposite (Scottish freezing weather and freezing fuel)
but never this. A few thoughts

If your belt is wet when you drive off it slips (plenty of revs but
little 'go' action) but I find that only lasts at most 200 yards.
(Puddles/standing water are best taken at less than 5 mph or more than 20)
Some other possibles:-

Sticking brakes especially rear drums/handbrake cables. Remedy is a
proper 'doing' every month or so. (Annual complete strip and free/lube
all cables/linkages).The front discs also easily get 'overnight rust'
and the slidy bits may also be stuck. Excercise the fronts by laying
down and pushing the caliper units outboard then get someone to
push/pump the pedal; repeat a few times.

Just behind the head near the radiator fan (so be very careful)is a
solenoid that clicks on with the 'ignition' to open the fuel valve. If
you can see or feel it, check that it opens fully at startup compared
to later.

If yours is a diesel like mine and with all this Baltic weather it
could be muck/water in fuel filter(s)which might not pass much fuel
until they warm up a bit. The main filter is the vertical job on the
side of your engine above and rear of the front pulley. The metal ring
on top unscrews and then you can replace or at least blow it clean.
(Kubota 15853.9917.0) You might also have another - a standard plastic
aftermarket type (Champion L101)behind the engine in the actual fuel
line: off with that and a good blow out or replace. I would also check
the air filter while you are at it.(Kubota 16667.11080)

Last I can think of is :Have a good gander with a mirror if ness. at
your throttle cable in case it is fraying

Hope this helps - anyone else have more ideas?

Hi Richard - My 2000 model 500SL lasted with the original weak Fulmen
for 3 years then my local dealer couldnt get one again but instead got
me a Global Yuasa type 047 32Amp/Hour (posts on the wrong side but
lead stretched easily)
That lasted 5 years but I don't see one for sale now so I had to
modify (very slightly) the car and get a Numax 054H 36 Amp/Hour from
't web. It is 180x127x223high on paper and looks the best but:-
Because of strengthening ribs it was just too wide at the strap
position - would have been only just possible to bodge it in by
altering the metal strap and having it on by a 'baw hair' as we say here.
Instead I removed the strap mounting (pull away the soundproofing from
the forward passenger footwell, unbolt the strap/backplate, cut the
strap, bend and drill for a tension bolt and lengthen the backplate
all to fit round the new battery.) I will add a picture - see Flying
Frog photos Now I have massive cold cranking power and no problems
with freezing cold starts (hundreds this year so far)

Good point - I reckon it is that agri or racing quads are either not
registered for the road or are classed as agricultural (unreggged
tractors can be driven for a limited mileage on 't road each year
(between fields) and regged ones require the appropriate licence.
Don't quote me though (Wonder if I can borrow Rab's racing quad engine
and re-register The Flying Frog as a tractor?)

Hi Supergran I own The Flying Frog (500SL)and while it is still going
strong (only 9 this summer) the Crossline interests me. Hope to hear
your likes/dislikes of it and how it compares. Some pix of the
underbonnet, inside and under the rear end (pardon me) would be nice.

Sorry to hear about the twat who destroyed your old car. Hope this one
is good. Would be nice to know if modern Aixams are free of the
traditional problems. Mine has suffered mostly from poor quality wheel
and gearbox bearings, poor quality exhaust, poor door seals and
headlight mountings (I have replaced all me bearings with best quality
ones, the exhaust is now a stainless job and I have reworked
everything else)
Anyway good luck and may the idiots keep away

I know it is NOT compliant for EPS standards in the US. But if i new

that is compliant, or a different engine that is.

I'd like to bring this truck to the States, but with the engine that is

Joe they are the Supermini twins, formerly Z482 but they have started
fitting the bigger 602.
The engine is "EPA tier 4" if that helps. The Kubota USA site isn't much
help, concentrating on the vehicles and not the engines. The larger 722 is
used in USA spec excavators.

I have always assumed this is a misprint for 15w50 I have used 15w40
from new to the present 65k miles without problem. I change it at 300
miles.
Important - also change the gear oil at the same time. (Easy way to do
that is to fit a 2ft tube to a 1 litre gear oil bottle top, only fill
it 3/4 (.75 litre - officially .71) then it easily reaches the filler
and delivers the right amount). Changing is then easier than topping
up and your box will be happier.

The 5W 50 engine oil spec is a French spec, but the British equivalent
is 0W 40 which is readily available as Mobil 1. Regarding the gearbox
oil, Halfords do a semi synthetic gear oil of their own brand which I
think is part number GL4 or GL5, this is more that adequate for the
gearbox's providing you change the oil every service. If you purchase
a filler bung and tube from your dealer, part numbers 3AAC12 and
3AAC61 to replace the old style black plastic one fitted, by extending
the tube upwards it is possible to fill the gearbox with a full litre
of oil which greatly extends wear life.

The Z482 engine was fitted into the '500 range' of Mega trucks and
for a short while in the '600 range' before swapping to the 602 engine
which is presently used.
Whilst the Z482 engine was not EPS compliant it was capable of meeting
California State emission regs and was rated and stamped by Kubota
accordingly prior to shipment where necessary.
Incidently the Mega vehicle is already shipped into the states under
agreement with Aixam-Mega by the Paccar company but only at present in
the electric format with flooded batteries instead of the lead gel
ones used for European construction.

All of the Superminis from Z482 to D902 are tier4 according to the German
Kubota website.

The Mega site
http://www.mega-vehicles.com/en-multitruck-van.html
claims 4.5L per 100km which is close to 60 miles per imp gallon, and 75 kmh
or 46.5 mph, that's with the 600 engine.
50mph and 90mpg is nearer to the performance for the little 500 car, the
truck has a big upright cab to drag along and at least 150lbs extra weight.
I have seen these figures for the truck on old websites and considered them
optimistic :o)

All the best, JJ.

All of the Superminis from Z482 to D902 are tier4 according to the German
Kubota website.

The Mega site
http://www.mega- vehicles. com/en-multitruc k-van.html
claims 4.5L per 100km which is close to 60 miles per imp gallon, and 75 kmh
or 46.5 mph, that's with the 600 engine.
50mph and 90mpg is nearer to the performance for the little 500 car, the
truck has a big upright cab to drag along and at least 150lbs extra weight.
I have seen these figures for the truck on old websites and considered them
optimistic :o)

All the best, JJ.

Chris any decent tyre place should be able to get them for you.
Only one make though, Michelin. And quite expensive.
IF your vehicle has sufficient clearance around the wheelarch, you may be able
to use 145/65 which gives more choice of tyre.
All the best, JJ.

There's a set of what are obviously Ambra alloy wheels with Michelin
tyres for sale on eBay just now (see item no. 290296524455). The
tyres probably aren't much good though.

BTW my Ambra is now up for sale, item no. 160315443748. The tyres are
excellent but you'll have to buy the rest of the car.

A sad day.....:(
