Hi Brian - my Aixam is the 'old' 500SL (bought in 2000) and from what I have
seen of the evolution models they seem identical except for the front lights,
indicators, and a possible subtle difference in the bonnet/front wing area
shapes to allow the faired in all-in-one lights instead of the older frenched
headlights and seperate indicators. (I always wanted to try grafting evo lights
onto mine). The inner wing part/s looks like a preformed tub so it (or it's
parts) should tie or clip somehow to the main front subframe risers L&R and
possibly up and behind in the engine bay.
I think all the running gear, body, frame, subframe, engine, powertrain, brakes,
inside parts inc. dash and wiring seats etc should all be safely
interchangeable.
Happy scrapping
Steve

sell new drivebelts at a much more reasonable rate. They speak english
so you can just call them.

Also, they sell all the spares, and by and large they are much, much
cheaper than elsewhere. Rear brake disc for £30 not £150 anyone?

According to the DVLA licenseing a B1 only mentions unladen weight of below

I find my Aixam fun and very very useful. And when i was fixing it the other

Hi Steve,
Many thanks for adding to what JJ suggested. Its all sound advice and will be
acted upon. Its really nice to be part of a group that actually like to
participate in helping fellow members with related mechanical issues. I don't
know how you feel, and I'll probably cause someone offense somewhere by saying
this, but these little cars just continually remind me of my childhood Meccano
sets, robust in a used for design purpose sort of way, tougher than they look,
instructive to whatever degree an owner wish's,and just plain fun! It's sad that
they get bad press from some who are just not suited to this type of adventure
in a vehicle. { nightmare?}
At the end of the day, a mechanical problem is no more or less than that. If I
can help anyone else to solve theirs, I will. In the meantime, very many thanks
for helping to solve mine.
VBR.   BJ.

Hi Brian - to add to what JJ said I have found plugs to last several years -
even bought new ones once but old ones still work OK.

I have found 2 things, first, every service I remove them to aid tappet setting
and naturally wire brush them, clean their connections and the insulating
porcelain bit. That seems to improve them. (amazing amount of dirt/dust still
gets right into that area - some will conduct a bit.

Second and more important, as soon as the battery gets a bit weak it affects
glowplugs - seems they are activated for a shorter than usual time and then need
several resets of the starter switch to heat enough. Couple that with just a
weeny bit slower cranking and the thing is much harder to start.

General wiring makeover is useful - especially main feeds/earths to engine (I
added an extra earth), new battery if ness. You probably won't get an original
tall shape so modify the strap (see my pics) - I found a Numax 054H 36a/h
(180x127, x223 tall) -also much cheaper - online.

Hope this helps - my experience - 30 years diesel cars vans, one big winch,
models, tractors - all diesel.
regards
steve

Hi Brian, sorry to hear your baby has a problem. The plugs from mine take
about 12 amps each (on 12v) dropping to 8 when they have warmed up. I
haven't measured them hooked up to the control circuit but may be somewhat
less depending on the proper output voltage.
They have been in there 7 years and still starts Ok. but I know from past
diesel vehicles that they don't last forever.
All the best, JJ.

Hi All,
I hope someone can advise me please? Our Aixam Mac has just started to be
very hard to start from cold.  I am a retired engineer with huge experience of
petrol engines of very many sizes, but other than nearly 3 years of absolute
delight with the Mac, no further diesel experience. I learn fast and understand
how diesels work, and maintain the little car well. When we bought it she had
been rolled violently for fun by vandals and was in an extremely bad state,
badly bent A pillar, battery acid eating substatially into everything etc, etc,
Patiently I rebuilt her to pristine condition and we have extensively used her
ever since. I mention this saga 'cos one of the components that suffered was the
heater plug relay which has been a bit dodgy ever since. Last week it expired
and won't respond to any surgery! Rossefields kindly found me another one, which
upon fitting made no difference. I have checked all adjacent wiring and renewed
the main connector
to the aforementioned little relay but cannot yet find a fault. I have checked
the wiring to the heater plugs behind the head, which seem ok, and also tested
and found switched battery current at the terminal bar across the top of the
heater plugs. My question is:   How much current should I be able to read here?
Or should I remove the glow plugs themselves to see that they physically work? I
had suspected fuel. but the fuel filter is clean and contains no water etc. I
did experience temporary failure of the cold start pilot bulb on the instr.panel
but this now works fine {bulb blew}.
Any advice would be most welcome.

That seems cheap !!!! The belt alone is probably £60 on its own. Unless its
Diesel(LOL)... Then theres the wear washers...

Plus the fact that Gordon Clown has screwed our economy/Pound so baddd that you

Well, hi Robert,
Here's one 500 Mac owner. We've had it nearly 3 years now and would not
part with it. It's totally standard and gets driven year round in every type of
weather on every type of road except motorway. It is maintained and loved, but
used hard. Kids chucked a rock through the windscreen two weeks ago for fun. It
won't be quite so much fun if I catch up with them! We too would like to know
how many Mac owners there are in the uk, and would like to buy another in the
future, restore one whatever. Its not our only car, nor our only aixam, but its
the car we drive the most. Criminal that they stopped making it.

If the "monopoly houses" are falling off constantly the groove of the circlip
that retains the half of the pulley back there has worn deeper than it should
have and is allowing the ramps to fall to far out of mesh. (it happened to me!)
One could put another circlip in the grove to push it all back into mesh but it
will eventually wear completely off and the whole things will drop to bits.Other
solutions coudl be Buy a new one(expensive) or get an engineering shop to alloy
weld it and re-cut the groove...

Hi All, I've had to replase hy wear tips 3 times this year, and also weld the
bracket from the engine block to the gear box ner the back pully.Something funny
going on?. My problems are last week my drive belt snaped, it was shredded, a
wright mess. Got the car home (RAC)only 2 wear tips and bracket broke again, got
new tips weled bracket, and all seamed ok, a week later on the way to shopping
trip heard something ping, then there was a horrible noise, like the car was
falling to bitsand it would hardly move for the first couple of mins then would
go a little faster but still the noise. Crawled home,no tips, bracket broke,
Thought right! I'm going to do some maintenace, took front pully off, changed
black washers, replased red blocks ( is there a right way and a wrong way to
putting the blocks and the weights back?)new tips on,started it up and as soon
as the fly wheel touches the belt with a feww revs the noise starts.like a
Banshee Howling, even in neutral as soon as rev it, also there seems to be a
thin metal washer bouncing about on the centre spindal of the back pully. I
think the noise is fromthe back pully, can't be sure, bit risky putting ya ear
near when it's running, again I'm not sure but I think the back pullys not
running true.HELP! Well that's the end of this novel, hope you all have'nt fell
asleep.
