FOCUS OF THIS BOOK

With advancements of information and communication technologies,
physical boundaries of local social networks have evaporated. Online
social networks replicate and enhance the benefits of traditional social
networks across time and space and accelerate and globalize the process.
The collaboration efforts among researchers in this environment are
called e-research collaboration.

E-Research Collaboration can be defined as: the use of information
communication technologies which enable the collaboration among
individuals/group engaged in a research project. These technologies can
range from email to enterprise packages and online software services.

While we have seen the unprecedented growth of social networking tools
such as MySpace, Facebook and Linkedin, these were primarily designed
for social purposes. It is only in the last year that we have begun to
see the emergence of research-based social networking tools. These
tools, for example, MyNetResearch and 2Collab, can facilitate
collaborative environments to orchestrate interaction within networks of
researchers, partners, and customers to boost creativity and innovation.
E-Research collaboration technologies can supply seamless connectivity
to allow work anywhere and anytime.

The mechanisms of e-research collaboration are an emergent phenomenon.
We invite researchers to submit analytical, case-study, conceptual,
experiential ethnographic or narrative papers to enhance our
understanding of the frameworks, practices and tools and techniques in
e-research collaboration.

Hi Sam,

      Since you are the chair, you can organise it as early as possible
!! It is always better to organise it sooner rather than later !!

      Duncan and Tom have kindly offer to help out the next round of
organising, in case of eventualities. This will be a good tradition for
AKT DC to pass on and preserve knowledge, if this is ok with you and
other PCs !!

Best Wishes,
Jessica

who can do this please make themselves known, I spoke to nigel and he

                      as part of the AKT Workshop

                              June, 2005
                            Open University
                             Milton Keynes
               http://wit.shef.ac.uk:8080/aktds/index.html

The AKT Doctoral colloquium will be held in conjunction with AKT
workshop, June 14-16, 2005 at the Open University. It will last for
one full day (or two half-days). Core participants of this
colloquium are AKT doctoral students. The colloquium will be
organised and run by AKT doctoral students.

Goals:

     * Increase visibility for doctoral student's work,
     * Provide an informal discussion forum,
     * Practice writing skills for an informatics paper,
     * Obtain advice from those outside your own research group,
     * Create a centralized and sharable web based information
repository that is particularly tailored to the community,
     * Build a research and social network among AKT doctoral
candidates,
     * Gain experience by organising/participating the colloquium.

Example Research Topics Included in the Doctoral colloquium:

     * Knowledge management
     * Knowledge capturing
     * Knowledge representation
     * Knowledge reuse
     * Knowledge dissemination
     * (Semantic) Interfaces, Interaction and Visualization
     * Natural Language Processing
     * Web services
     * Constraint satisfaction
     * Agent Systems
     * Ontologies
     * Multi-media annotation and replay
     * Social network analysis and trust
     * Knowledge based systems

The topics can be approached from several different perspectives:
e.g.

     * Theoretical,
     * Systems engineering,
     * Application,
     * Case study,
     * System evaluation.

All contributions are required to state explicitly in the abstract
which topic they are addressing.

Important Dates:

Paper submission:  April 30, 2005
Notification:     May 15, 2005
Camera-ready version:  May 30, 2005
Colloquium date: TBC: it will last for one full day or two
half-days during the AKT Workshop.

Submission:

All AKT supported PhD students are required to submit at least one
paper. There are two types of papers: full (up to 8 pages) or short
papers (up to 4 pages). There are two types of short papers:
position and demo papers. All papers should be formatted according
to the Springer LNCS guidelines.

Each submission needs to nominate one reviewer (e.g. own supervisor)
who will be responsible to review one or two AKT submitted papers.

All papers should include:

     * Motivation
     * An introduction to background technologies and related work
     * How the reported work is different from other existing work
     * Work progress so far
     * Future work and references.

Position papers should place emphasis on the existing work in the
field, the gaps left by current work, and the proposal of one's own
work. Demo papers should emphasize the use of a built system based
on typical or example user scenarios. A comparison with other
existing systems is most desirable.

Authors are encouraged to sign up to the AKT postgraduate discussion
forum at: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/akt-postgraduates/

Submission method:

Electronic submission via
http://wit.shef.ac.uk:8080/aktds/index.jsp.

RESENT AS YAHOO BLOCKED MY EARLIER MSG's - sorry if you receive this again

Hi all,

The current page (http://www.dcs.shef.ac.uk/~sam/aktds/) is currently
placed unlinked in my home directory but will move soon, (does anyone in
Southampton want to organise a local mirror or address mapping of some
sort - the bare minimum is we will need links from the AKT site)

Obviously this is somewhat out of date but it is the version I did last
time around, this was intended as a place holder from which to then
develop a better site, this clearly needs work...

as such

I would like to request any up-to-date, calls for papers, topics of
interest, roles and people lists etc, basically anything you have to
hand that could be appropriate.

Also if EVERYONE involved could send a portrait dimension photo of
themselves i will add the gallery of the organisation committee, if
anyone wants to add a link and/or two line description of themselves or
your work within AKT this would also be welcome and added to the page.
(let me know if you would like your email publishing or not)

As for the rest of the design I imagine a standard workshop site:

An intro page detailing the aims dates etc.
in depth call page (Jessica can you give the details when you have them)
committee gallery (I need details from EVERYONE for this)
paper submission page (anyone have details of formats, PDF, tex etc - is
this decided??)
location and details of venue? (anyone have this already, best if the
local organisor for the site gives me prose, please make yourself known
to me)
etc etc (feel free to suggest more i.e. do we have a page detailing
funding for travel, if so, is this being made available externally or
just for AKTors, also should we have a page of external speakers, I
imagine Nigel will organise some?? but i doubt we will know who until
nearer the time?)

or anything else you think may be helpful.

Sam

P.S. in Southampton we also mentioned adding additional people not at
the meeting to the organisation committee, i.e. other AKTors there are
no additions from Sheffield, what about anywhere else???

P.P.S. should site changes etc be required in the future and I'm
traveling etc, Ajay (A.Chakravarthy@..., also from Sheffield,
should also be informed please CC all site queries to him also and not
just to me as i may be unable to help at times)

Hi all,

I'm currently in Spain, then at a conference I'm helping orgainse, then
Italy, then potentially the US, so I may not have a lot of time to
currently set up the website - I will however create an initial
placeholder site in the next week or so.

When in Edinburgh we mentioned hosting this on the AKT site - how can i
get permissions or rights to post here? anyone in southampton want to help
organise this, if its problematic I can put it on the sheffield site for
now...

for instance
