BURMA DIGEST
A Campaign Journal for Human Rights of All Ethnic Nationalities in Burma
13.03.2007
English Language Section
I. " Burma's Human Rights Day"_ Editorial: Tai Samyone
_ It is perhaps useful to look at how human rights have changed since 1988, with a review of the US State Departments 2006 report on Human Rights........The summary for the Human Rights record in Burma shows just how far the junta have moved – in the wrong direction!.........
II. " Can Sanctions Promote Human Rights?"_ Candid Commentary: Dr. Tayza
_ Before becoming a full-time political activist, I was once a medical doctor; and, when we were in medical school we had to learn that even a very good life-saving drug may have serious side-effects. If you don't want to die of overwhelming gangrene and also don't want to chop off the gangrenous limb, you need to contain it with bitter medicines..........in a rather Clintonesque expression, let me say "It's sanctions, stupid".
III. "Victims of Human rights Violations" _ Feature Article: Sao Noan Oo
_ It is the Generals that give orders to the soldier, crouching over his rifle, who knows nothing better than the hunger or the desire to kill as he lives every day of his life by the gun, by the command and by the indoctrination of his masters. ....... .......
IV. "Are we ready for democracy in Burma? " _ Feature Article: Victor Khambil
_ The national convention will surface with nothing good for the people of Burma. The military regime already drafted constitution according to their wish but this convention is just to design the cover page of already drafted military constitution.......What the junta escort as democracy into the public will surely be the wrong guy in the right time while the right guy will still remain confined...........
V. "Junta's Ethnic Cleansing in Eight Stages "_ Analysis: Dr. San Oo Aung
_ According to President of Genocide Watch, Gregory Stanton, genocide develops in eight stages that are "predictable but not inexorable". The FBI has found somewhat similar stages for hate groups. And we can see that SPDC junta's ethnic cleansing is going along the same lines. .............
VI. " US Yet to Take it Seriously"_ Commentary: Cedric
_ The United States Government, of all the governments not allied to the SPDC, undoubtedly has the most detailed intelligence of Burma's military potential. The US Government is not publicly exploiting the intelligence it has about the SPDC's nuclear weapons program because the evidence is not yet conclusive........ .....
VII. " The Pig Who Would Be King" _ Humour: Art Attack
_ The general attempts to revise history to prove he is the direct descendant of Burma's royal families...............
VIII. "Burma Travel Documentary, part 2 " _ Travel Documentary: Sarsu Yin
_ At the top of Mandalay Hill there is a new college towards the north-west next to what appears to be a prison. We ask questions to the other visitors about the large semi-circle. It is half that of the one in Rangoon. But they point out the new college seemingly to avoid speaking about the point. It is obvious that this is prison because of the double walls and guard towers. Someone later admits that this is the notorious Mandalay prison... ...........
IX. "Supreme Heroes " _ Poem: Nay Yu
_ Life is nothing for our journey.........Still marching close to the victory.........We shall soon end the history... ...........
X. "Junta's Final Solution for Forced Labour " _ Cartoon: Feraya
XI. " Girls Raped and then Imprisoned"_ Special Report: Women League of Burma
_ The recent jailing of four Kachin schoolgirls in Burma who had been gang-raped by SPDC soldiers is an outrageous mockery of justice which brings shame on all regional bodies of which Burma is a member...............
XII. "Calling for Medical Doctor & Computer Teacher " _ Announcement: AEIOU Program
_ AEIOU Programme is calling for Volunteer Assistant Teacher for Computer to teach this semester & one volunteer medical doctor to care for the students .............
XIII. " Petitioning for Doctors Behind Bars" _ Announcement : Women of Burma ( UK)
