Sittwe Video Halls Shut Down Over Demonstration Fears

The authorities in Sittwe ordered many video halls to stop showing films to the public after a rumor began spreading that monks in the city are planning on gathering at the video halls to stage a demonstration, said one monk from Sittwe.

The monk said, "Most of the video halls in Sittwe were closed down by authorities, except for some video halls that are close to the authorities, after a rumor has been spreading that monks will be staging a demonstration after gathering at video halls."

According to a source close to monks in Sittwe, some monks had plans to stage a demonstration in Sittwe on 29 August after gathering at some video halls in Kathay Wra Ward in Sittwe.

However, the plan was abandoned by the monks after the authority deployed many armed forces in the ward and prohibited the showing of films on the 29th.

"Since then, the authority has not allowed most video halls in Sittwe to show films to the public, especially during the day time, after authorities received information that monks have plans to stage a protest in Sittwe," the monk said.

In Sittwe, there are over 100 video halls operating. It is a lucrative business in Sittwe because the low cost makes it a common pastime of many poor people.

The monk added that monks in Sittwe have been trying to stage a demonstration but all their plans have been foiled by the authorities before they had a chance to start, so monks in Sittwe are looking for alternative places to gather for demonstrations.  Video halls were targeted as an assembly place for a demonstration.

The authorities in Sittwe found out about the plan of the monks and subsequently prohibited the video halls from operating.  They have also deployed armed forces at many monasteries and temples in order to crackdown on potential demonstrations.

Meanwhile, some monks in Sittwe have reportedly formed a new organization by the name of "The Valiant Young Monk Committee", with the aim of fighting for democracy against the Burmese military government.  There are at least 18 young monks serving on the committee.#

4 Political Prisoners Expected to be Used for Forced Labor at Remote Prison

Four political prisoners in Arakan State were moved from their home district to a remote prison notorious for the use of forced labor, said a close associate of the prisoners.

He said, "They are not guilty at the prison of Thandwe and they were serving their jail term without any trouble at the prison, but the authority sent them to Buthidaung prison from Thandwe. It is with the intent of using them as forced labor."

The Buthidaung prison is located 80 miles north of the Arakan State capital Sittwe, and is notorious in Arakan because many prisoners have been used as forced labor by the authorities at work throughout the area.

"Many prisoners including political prisoners have been widely forced by prison authorities to work at many sites in the township of Buthidaung.  I heard most prisoners are working at road construction sites and brick-making fields," he said.

Ko Moe Kyaw, Ko Than Htay, Ko Zaw Min Naing, and Ko Aung Naing Min were moved to Buthidaung from Thandwe prison; it is believed they were moved because the authorities plan on subjecting them to forced labor.

The associate said, "They are politicians and they are supporters of the Burma democracy movement, so authorities want to give them a lesson on avoiding politics in the future after they are released from prison."

The four democratic activists were arrested by police in Taungup on 27 March, 2008, while they were in the streets distributing statements issued by NLD headquarters in Rangoon.

After their arrest, police charged them under Section 451, which covers trespassing in a private home. The Taungup township court sentenced them to one year in prison.

They were first sent to Thandwe to serve their sentence, but authorities shifted them to Buthidaung prison on 29 August.

A politician from Buthidaung confirmed that the four arrived at Buthidaung from Sittwe on the evening of 30 August on board the Aung Takun ferry ship. #

18 Bangladeshis Handed Over in Flag Meeting

Eighteen Bangladesh nationals were transferred by Burma's border security force to Bangladesh Rifles during a flag meeting held in the Burmese border town of Maungdaw, according to a Nasaka report.

The Bangladesh nationals were arrested by Burmese border security forces a couple of months ago for entering Burmese territory without permission.

The Nasaka report stated that 18 Bangladeshis were handed over to Bangladesh authorities during the flag meeting in a display of friendship between the two neighboring countries.

The flag meeting was held at a government guest house in Maungdaw and lasted from 10 am until 1 pm.

A ten-member Burmese team led by Maungdaw Nasaka commander, U Than Thay, attended the meeting, while a 13-member Bangladesh team was led by Colonel Bai Ja Mugmad from BDR Regiment 42 based in Teknaf.

According to Nasaka, the two delegations discussed many issues at the meeting, including trafficking, border trade, border demarcation, smuggling, and border security.

Nasaka sources said the meeting was beneficial and successful after they discussed the bilateral issues.#

Three Muslim Leaders Released in Arakan

Three Muslim leaders who were arrested by Burmese military authorities in March last year were released Thursday on bail in the border town Maungdaw, said a close friend of the three.

He said, "They were released yesterday from Maungdaw jail, but the release is on bail."

The released leaders were identified as Dr. Hla Myint, Dr. Anna Wa, and Nokur Bi, who was a UNHCR driver.  All are residents of Maungdaw.

They were arrested by Sarafa, the Burmese military intelligence unit, on 30 March 2007 along with nine other Muslim leaders in Maungdaw on accusations they had formed an organization without government permission.

Maungdaw police charged them under Section 17 (1) and 17 (2), for the illegal formation of an organization.

The other nine Muslim leaders, including lawyer U Than Tun and Dr. Tun Aung, remain in prison and are expected to be sentenced to imprisonment by the authority.
