Three of a family commits suicide

Three members of a family in Sittwe, the capital of Arakan State, committed suicide today by consuming poison, said a relative.

“It is very sad and tragic. All the family members died on the spot after having poison,” he said.

The victims were identified as U Aung Hla Sein (33), his son Soe Win (11) and his daughter Aye San dar Khin (10). All of them are from Bauk Thi Su quarter in Sittwe.

“We found them on the floor in their house at 10: 30 a.m. No one was alive,” he said.

The suicide could be related to their deteriorating family business. The children’s mother left the family a few years ago in search of a job in Thailand, local sources said.

“The children’s mother went to Thailand a few years ago and has not returned home.. The family was also suffering because of this,” local sources said.

The bodies of the family members were sent to Sittwe general hospital today noon for post mortem. Many sympathizers from the town visited the hospital.

Unidentified group from Burma enters Bangladesh, opens fire

An unidentified armed group from Burma fired several rounds in a remote village in Bangladesh near the Burma border after entering Bangladesh territory, said a villager.

“About 15 armed men fired many gunshots in the air making villagers flee when they entered our village,” he said.

The incident occurred in a remote village located in Nakhongsari Township in Bandarban hill district, near Burma border on May 20.

“Our village is small and located at the upper end of a river in Bangladesh which local people call “Pan Wa creek”. All the villagers fled from the village when they saw the armed men who fired in the air,” the villager said.

All the armed men were wearing green coloured uniforms like those of the Burmese Army but the villagers could not identify whether they were Burmese Army troops or Arakanese guerrillas.

The incident was reported by villagers to the border forces in Nakhongsari. However, there is no information whether Bangladeshi border security forces pushed them back to Burma, a local source said.

A monk from the area said, the armed group collected ransom from bamboo and wood cutters, working in the area, before they left.

Most villagers in the area are apprehensive of their security after the incident, said the monk.

Junta officials extort money from villagers

Burmese military junta officials in Kyaukpru, the second largest city in Arakan state, have extorted money from local villagers after they built homes on a plot located in the outskirts of their village, said a villager.

“The officials came to our village along with our village tract chairman to extort money as we built homes on a plot in the outskirts of the village. They told us that the construction of homes in village outskirts is illegal and the houses must be demolished. Or else, we have to pay 50,000 kyat per house,” the villager quoted them as saying.

The six villagers, who constructed houses, in Khala Dwin village under Ray Myat village tract are in trouble after the officials demanded bribes. The villagers are U San Pho, U Tun Tin, U Maung San, U kyaw sein chay, U Kyaw Hla Chay and U Maung Aye Pru.

“It is impossible to stay in a house with all family members. Some elder sons or daughters from the family are set up and live in separate houses. It is not a crime and flouting of the law but we are under pressure by officials for bribes,” he said.

According to a local villager, the official team was led by township secretary from Kyauk Pru. The other members are U Tun Sein, Assistant Manager from the Township Agriculture Department, U San Khin, senior police clerk, U Shwe Myint, chairman of Ray Myat village trace, U Hla Myint, secretary of the village and U Ba Hla, the government appointed village clerk.

However, the matter of asking for bribes from those who constructed new houses is now pending because higher authorities from Kyau Pru district ordered the officials not to do so, after an educated villager complained to senior officials.

“Even though demanding bribes have stopped at present after senior official’s intervened, we have to pay some money to them because the misguided officials can disturb us anytime regarding our new buildings,” the village said,

Meanwhile, the officials collected bribe from other villagers from Kyu Lwin village, Taung Ngu village and Baw Rabar village in Kyauk Pru Township for constructing new houses.

According to villager, Ko Nyi Chay from Kyu Lwin village had to pay 4000 kyat to the officials while Ko Thein Aung had to pay 2000 kyat for a new house.

U Aung Than from Taung Ngu village gave 15,000 kyat to them for his new house. The official team also collected bribe from many villagers of Baw Rabar village in Kyauk Pru Township for construction of new houses. The victims are  U Aung Chit San , U Pyung Chi Yay , U Thein Tun , U Aung then Tun , U U Maung Zan , U Nha Pru Aung , U Maung Than , U Tha Tun , U Than Aung. All villagers had to pay between 5,000 and 10,000 kyat.

In Arakan state, the government officials are not only taking bribe from local villagers but also army personnel. This they do so whenever they need money. #
