Abuse of labour Rights in Arakan

Twenty five workers from a salt production site ran away for fear of arrest by police after the owner of the business lodged a complaint accusing them of stealing salt, said the father of a worker in Sittwe.

“My son, who was working in the salt production site, informed me that he fled from the workplace after a police team came to arrest them after the owner accused them of stealing,” he said.

U Than Win, owns the salt factory called Shwe Pyi Phyo salt factory. It is located in Bogri Photha Wra ward in Sittwe, the capital of Arakan state.

The salt production site is located in Nga Pre That village in Pauk Taw Township, 30 miles from Arakan state capital Sittwe.

According to local sources, U Than Win had an agreement with 25 workers from Sittwe to produce salt from salt farms he owned in Nga Pre That village. It was also agreed to share the profit on a half and half basis between the owner and workers.

The workers produced many tons of raw salt from the farms during the summer period and received profits equally in accordance with the agreement.

In May, before the onset of the rainy season, the workers produced 300 bags of salt from the farms. They informed the owner of the amount produced and asked him to put it up for sale.

However, a police team led by Maung Tun Tha from Kyauk Taung police station located near the salt farm came to arrest them but all the workers managed to escape because the police team was short of manpower.

“I heard that the salt farm owner did not want to share the profits of the last production with the workers. So he lodged a complaint with a senior police official from Sittwe accusing the workers of misappropriation of salt. He urged the police officer to arrest them after bribing the officer,” the worker’s father said.

On the instructions of the police officer, police inspector Maung Tun Tha went to the salt farms along with four police constables to arrest the workers. The police team seized all salt in the farms and equipments after the workers fled. Later the police inspector handed over 300 salt bags and materials to U Than Win.

In Burma, there are no workers’, labour organizations or unions to fight for labour rights. Because of this many workers are suffering in many workplaces in Arakan state as well as in the rest of Burma.

Sri Lankan President to visit Burma soon

Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapakse will pay a three day visit to Burma in the near future to boost bilateral ties between the two countries, government sources said.

The visit is a first by the Sri Lankan President abroad after its troops conquered the Tamil Tigers guerrilla force in May 2009.

Both countries have been facing long-term insurgency in their territories, after independence from the British.

President Rajapakse yesterday said both countries had shared common platforms at many regional and international forums.

The message was conveyed by the President to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and Burma.

During his visit, President Rajapakse will inaugurate a village re-built after the devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008. A Sri Lankan Buddhist monk raised the funds for re-construction of the houses.

“My visit to the Union of Myanmar this month and the numerous other activities proposed to take place in our two countries as part of the 60th anniversary celebrations will further consolidate our bilateral relations,” President Rajapakse said. #

Burma's Nasaka Fire on Bangladeshi Fishermen, 11 injured

Burmese border forces opened fire on Bangladeshi fishing boats catching Hilsa fish in the mouth of the Naff River around St. Martin Island last Thursday, leaving 11 fishermen wounded, report border sources.

According to reports, Nasaka are said to have intruded into Bangladesh territory and opened fire on the Bangladeshi fishing boats in the Batirdia Sea Channel in Teknaf Township near St. Martin's Island, and then proceeded to loot their boats of fishing nets and other valuables.

One of the fishermen reportedly sustained serious injuries to his head from a gunshot.

"Nasaka ordered the Bangladeshi fishermen to come closer to them and then started shooting at them when they tried to flee. They [Nasaka] had caught three boats and pushed the fishermen into a small old boat, taking away all their possessions," said a Burmese fisherman who witnessed the incident.

Hilsa fishing in the sea is a lucrative business for fishermen from both countries during the beginning of the rainy season, which is known as Hilsa fish season among the fishing communities.

One Bangladeshi fisherman from Teknaf said that due to the atrocities committed by Nasaka, fishermen suspended fishing in the area after this most recent incident and are facing great losses this Hilsa season.

One of the fish traders also said that they had complained of the matter to the Teknaf governing body.

According to the fish traders on the Bangladesh border, Nasaka has been committing frequent attacks on Bangladeshi fishermen. In most cases, the fishermen are fired on, robbed of their possessions, and kidnapped for ransom.

178 Burmese Muslim Pushed Back to Burma in 4 Days

By Tun Kyaw

Within four days 178 Rohingya Muslims from Burma who entered Bangladesh illegally were arrested and pushed back across the border to Burma by Bangladesh authorities, a source reports.

The individuals were arrested by Bangladesh Rifles Battalion No. 17 in the area of Bangladesh's Ukia Sub-division under Cox's Bazar District on the border of Maungdaw Township in Arakan State as they attempted to enter Bangladesh illegally to seek refuge.

Many Rohingyas were arrested on a bus in an area of Phalaung Khali while another 25 were arrested on a bus in the area of Balukhali in Ukia Sub-division, on the Teknaf - Cox's Bazar highway last Wednesday when authorities set up checkpoints for buses traveling that route.

Rohingyas from Burma have been illegally entered Bangladesh in groups one after another over the last month. "The flow of Burmese Muslims into Bangladesh has been unabated," said a border security officer on the condition of anonymity.

Local newspapers claim that Burmese entering Bangladesh are mixing into populations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and causing crime and social unrest.

Due to the increasing numbers of Rohingyas fleeing Burma and entering Bangladesh, a committee comprised of 17 government departments was formed to prevent an influx of Rohingyas from Burma, said an official report.
