Hi,
From your post it sounds like you have to have some form of computer
to control the robot, be it a PC or MCU of some type. The easy to
get hold of parts in most places are PCs, think back to the older
PCs such as the 386s and 486s, some these have 5 ¼ floppy drives in
(you know, the really big disk ones that really were floppy). These
have stepper motors in, two of these could make the base for your
robot, then have an external PC to control them from the parallel
port (search the web for info on that).
That should be the easiest way to do things, as well as being cheap.
