As many of you will probably know, Groundwork and the Friends have
secured some funding to erect 5 information boards in the park, with
some details of the history of the site. We are also going to
produce some booklets and a cd rom to go with them.
So far, we have held one session to discuss the general history of
the area, during which we heard some very interesting personal
memories of the Ragged School at Charter Street. For the next
meeting, we have lots of information which we have found at Charter
Street about the area to look through. We propose dividing up the
information into five rough themes (to go one one of each of the
boards). These are :
St Michael's Church
The parish burial ground (the bit separate from St Michael's Church)
Social History (housing, schooling, health etc)
Characters who visited / lived / were associated with the schools in
the area eg Engels, Thomas Wright, Churchill, Jerome Caminada,
General Gordon
Regeneration and the idea of how the area has come full circle
If you are particularly interested in any of these subjects, please
let me know. The research is very informal and fiendly, you don't
need to know anything before you come along!
I will kepp you posted about the date of the next meeting.
All the best
Sophie
