Hi Everyone,

I am sending this message in regards to the ragged school house that one of my
associates has just bought to turn into a creative community space.
We want to do an event publising this for FutureSonic, and wondered whether we
could set up a meeting to discuss all the possibilities for everyone to get
involved or how we could collaberate.

Please get back in touch

Kind Regards

Janey

On behalf of the (ex)residents of Ophthalmic Works thanks to everyone
for the support, not sure how much people are interested in all this,
if not skip to last 1 line directly group-related paragraph!

Basically the fire was apparently particularly intense although
flames only went into 2 flats from what I can gather but there was a
terrible amount of smoke damage. The first weekend the building was
closed completely as it has been declared unsafe & props were put in
but access is still strictly controlled & the building is padlocked
shut outside daylight hours. The plumbing is not working at all &
electricity has only been restored to communal areas this week.

Don't believe everything you read in the MEN!!! I'd be surprised if
more than 35 of us were evacuated to Collyhurst police station, not
the 100 they claimed! There is still no word on what exactly made the
2 cars catch fire in the basement - initially was suspected it was a
firework just because it was early hours (4.30am-ish) of 6th
November, we haven't had an official report on the cause yet. Fire
alarms didn't work, just amazing no one was badly injured or even
died, we eagerly await why that was in the fire investigators report
too.

They've said they'll start work on the least affected flats which as
the fire was in the basement we guess will be the 4th floor. They've
said no one will be in before the very end of February at the
arliest, so might as well call it March then! I was on the 2nd so
will be amazed if I'm back in before Easter.

Will be renting just round the corner from next week hopefully (in
spite of company cash flow problems - I'm having to pay upfront &
reclaim later... don't ask!!!) so if there's anything Angel Meadow
related on any time soon hopefully I'll make it. Sorry haven't done
much this year - was working away most of the time & was working in
Manchester on the day of the last event.

Are we having a Christmas do this year?

Thanks everyone
Louise - formerly of Ophthalmic Works!!

Hi,

As you may know one of the buildings that overlooks the park, the
Ophthalmic Works, was badly damaged in a fire, last Thursday.

All flats there have being sealed off due to smoke & fire damage and as
such residents are awaiting access before they can ascertain their own
personal losses.

An article on the MEN site details the events.

Our thoughts & condolences go to the residents of this apartments, who
have contributed and enjoyed Angel Meadow Park over the years.

Hey everyone!

This isn't in Angel Meadow but it is just down the road and I thought
some of you might be interested!

Friends of Sackville Gardens are organising a Halloween shindig this
evening at the park on Sackville Street in the village. There'll be
face painting, pumpkin carving, lantern making and apple bobbing...
plus some stuff for the kids too! There'll also be mead served, pumpkin
soup and a lovely hogroast to warm the cockles of your heart!

It runs from 5pm-8pm so you can come straight after work or pop down
later. I think there might be a fancy dress competition for the kids if
you want to bring them.

Maybe see some of you there!

Hi,

Unfortunately one of the history boards by the Lowry steps has being
nicked and another covered in graffiti. On top of that the FOAM
notice board looks like its being covered in white paint.

Its very sad, considering the effort & time that went into to raising
finances, researching the history and finally installing the history
boards.

In 2005 we won an award from the Local Heritage Initiative of £24,000
to put up 5 history boards and ran a number of community workshops to
research the history before they were installed along with a the
publication of a booklet and CD rom.

Vandalism spawns more vandalism so hopefully we can clean up the
graffiti and maybe raise finances to get another board in - but
PLEASE if you see anything dodgy happening or vandalism phone the
police - Tel: 0161 2368033 and lets try and keep the park looking its

Hey everyone!

We'll be doing a planting day next Sunday in the park.

Come help us plant some daffodils and bluebells and do a quick clean up
to keep it looking pretty and then afterwards we'll convene in The
Marble Arch for a well deserved pint (or an orange juice if you're
planning a heavy night on the Saturday!)

We'll be meeting at the double gates at 11am and the planting and clean
up should last a couple of hours, with a trip to the pub at around
1ish. Let us know if you're coming along and feel free to give me (Kev)
a call if you have any questions or whatever - 07772 608 058.

Hope to see you there!

Hello,

You may have seen on Aspin Lane, the grand looking wall plaque has
returned having being restored to its former glory.

The plaque which reads 'This land was enclosed at the expense of the
overseers of the township of Manchester. 1888' had being
neglected, so Friends of Angel Meadow applied for a Manchester City
Council CAS:H Grant of £650 to restore and re-site.

The grant was won in later 2007 and work begun with the plaque
restored & re-sited in early June this year.

Some before and after photographs can be seen in the Photos section on
this site at:

Photo Albums > Wall Plaque Restoration 2008

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this restoration project.

Hopefully this plaque will look great for another 100 years!!

Regards,
Mike

Hi, In preparation for the Gardening Day on the 17th May - I have a number of
posters and leaflets I'd like to put up and distribute in the flats surrounding
the park. Therefore if anyone would like to help out I am organising a get
together on Wednesday 07th May at 6.30pm - meeting at the entrance to the Park.
It shouldn't take more than 1/2 an hour - and afterwards the intention is to go
onto the pub for some food and beers - either the Marble or into the Northern
Quarter. So if you'd like to help out - or even discuss the future of the park
please feel free to come along. A copy Gardening Day poster can be found on this

Hi Michelle

Just checked with the council and it's definitely off this year, which is a
great shame.

The Beeb have decided to run a low key event in Wythenshawe Park this year
(creating a wildlife garden) instead. As Mike said, there is nothing to stop us
running an event of our own...

Hi Michelle, We hope it is - but we just don't know yet - they normally let us
know around end of May. Its verging on unlikely though as they're hosted it for
2 years in our park - and a number of other parks are questioning why its not
held in theirs. If you're (or anyone else) is interested in getting involved in
the park and could think up an event - anything from a picnic or fair - we have
some money squirrelled away which could make it happen - plus there is a chance
to apply for grants/ funding for more, please let me know and we can make it
happen. Cheers,Mike --- In angelmeadow@..., "michelle.rickett"

Hi,

This has probably been posted before, but I can't find any messages
about it. Is the Springwatch festival happening again this year in
Angel Meadow park?

Thanks,
Michelle

Hi there,

If you've not already heard, I am taking part in this year's Keswick
to Barrow sponsored walk, in the Lake District - all 40 miles which
is
completed in one day.

It's going to be torturous with lots of blisters! I hope to complete
it in around 10-11 hours, having started around 5.30am. Why this
madness I hear you ask?

Well I am raising money for St Margaret's Hospice in Somerset which
do a fantastic deed throughout this county looking after patients
with terminal/ incurable illnesses and who were very supportive of
our family when my grandmother was taken in.

The walk is on the Saturday 10th May 2008, therefore I would really
appreciate it if you'd like to sponsor me. For details on how please
follow the link below,

Thanks in advance for your support,

Mike Wingfield
