HELENE ERIKSEN
TRADITIONAL DANCES OF THE EAST
www.helene-eriksen.de

News:
I've just gotten back from Norway and Turkey. Both were wonderful. I
really enjoyed teaching both for the dance community and for the
University in Trondheim and I will probably be returning, including a
stop in Oslo, in the summer of 2006.
Due to a lot of wonderful coincidences the tour to Istanbul turned out
to be even more exciting then I had planned. Extras included an
beautiful concert of Ottoman and Armenian music in the Aya Irini church
and a Alevi party/concert with a great "performance" of Alevi semah and
several great folk singers including the heartfelt Sabahat Akkiraz.
Following the tour to Istanbul I did a field research project with
colleagues from the ICTM Sub-Study Group on Ethnochoreology and the Ege
University in Izmir in the Zeybek region of SW Turkey. We visited Alevi
and Yörük villages and found lots of wonderful music and dance and warm
people. Stay tuned for reports and photos of both the tour and the
field research project.
Next year I am planning another tour to Istanbul and immediately
following a week in SW Turkey staying in villages. These two tours can
be booked individually or together. The tour to Istanbul will be
similar to the program this year and more information on the rural tour
will be available in the fall, but I have already opened my waiting list
and have my first inquiries...so if you are interested be sure to
contact me early for next year's tours.
Coming up in June is a week intensive in Denmark. For those not
aquatinted with the Danish Hojskole system, this is a wonderful way to
study the arts in a really inexpensive way. The Vestjyllandsojskole is
beautifully situated and has some of the most fantastic experimental
food that I've ever tasted...defintly the best school cafeteria food you
will meet anywhere. I will be teaching a week-long intensive together
with Lar-Bo Kujahn, one of Scandinavia's best Arabic percussionists.
Hope to see you there!
