Hi Folks
Hope you're all having a good weekend. I hear from James/Gemma that GB Junior
Women's training went well today, and hope that any involved in Winter League or
similar tomorrow have a good one!
One of the local papers wants to run another article on Arctic, and are coming
into school on MONDAY to get some photos! Obviously we now have a few photos
from here and there (like the ones in AT Times) that we can give them to use,
but they want to come and take their own.
If you want to be included, and who knows - maybe interviewed for a quote or two
- turn up at the Sports Hall on Monday start of lunch, get changed, and see
what's what... I don't know what they will want to do. I've suggested that they
come for 12:40 though, so there's plenty of time. I don't know whether it'll be
indoors or outdoors - guess it depends a bit on the weather...
Bring your Arctic shirt if you have one, and also your white AT playing shirt I
guess....
Tell people - text them, pop round, spread the word!!!

Subject: Junior 1 Day Indoor Results
Hi all,
I've got to say that being involved in Junior Ultimate is very
rewarding. The players from this weekend's tournament in Nottingham
never stopped smiling and were very happy and fun to be around. We've
not run Junior tournaments in Nottingham before, this was our first,
but it defiantly won't be our last.
So here's a tip for any budding tournament directors out there.
Organise a Junior tournament. Do it for just one day. There is masses
of demand out there for it. You can charge a sensible price, (we
charged £45) put on a good value tournament and still take home a
decent profit for yourself, or you can do as Flyght Club do and split
the profit with the UKUA Junior Development Fund, and help the next
generation of superstars get to Vancouver next year.
Even if you've never run a tournament before, 1 day tournaments are a
very easy way to start.
Anyway to the results. There were lots of close games in the second
half of the day, with some excellent performances from new teams Discy
Business and Kent Juniors. Linz's pick up team even managed to take
home the plate. The final went to sudden death, as is the way with
Nottingham finals these days, but Ocelots 1 took home a Lookfly
sponsored cap each with a great victory over Arctic 1.
Results - I've include the location where I know it
1 Ocelots 1 (Cheshire)
2 Arctic 1 (Arthur Terry School - Sutton Coldfield)
3 Kent
4 NC Hammer
5 Discy Business (Stoke Newington - London)
6 Catch Those 1 (Wirral)
7 Stourbridge
8 Catch Those 2 (Wirral)
9 Linz's Team (Leicester and Wakefield)
10 Ocelots 2 (Cheshire)
11 Arctic 2 (Arthur Terry School - Sutton Coldfield)
12 Aviators (Nottingham High School)
13 NC Hammer 2
14 The UFOs
15 Evolution
16 Arctic 3
The spirit was brilliant all weekend with every team getting at least
1 spirit vote. The prize was split three ways between Arctic 2,
Aviators and NC Hammer 2.
Photos can be found at :-

If you are not sure how competitive the level of play was take a look
at some of the shots in the best of album. (Very competitive)
Thanks go to all the junior organisers that get the teams there, to
Tim from Stourbridge and all the others that helped with scoring, to
Lookfly for their support, and Steve for his assistance and the wicked
logo.
Cheers all

Hi All
Just a quick write up of the tournament in Sutton Coldfield last weekend. Thank
you everyone who was there for making it such a good event, despite the
miserable weather (esp on the Saturday!)... With 17 Junior teams it was the
biggest ever - and I'm pretty confident that record will be beaten next year if
the Junior game keeps growing as it is... The standard of play was higher than
I've seen it before with competitive games all through the final play offs, and
the spirit was good throughout.
I'm not going to write up much of a report, as I didn't get to see many games. I
think it is fair to say that before the tournament the Mowers were the odds-on
favourites to make the final and claim the trophy for the third time, and any of
the teams seeded 2nd to 8th (Air Badgers, Catch Those, Ocelots, Thundercatch,
6FFU, Arctic and NC Hammer) would have liked to think that on their day,
injuries etc notwithstanding, they might be the ones to provide the opposition
for the Mowers in the final and see if they could cause an upset. The seedings,
certainly of the top 8, were fairly accurate; Arctic 2 were the only team not
seeded in the top 8 to take the advantage of the top half/bottom half crossover
on Sunday morning, and broke into the quarters at the expense of Thundercatch.
In pool play on Saturday, Arctic 1 had managed a sudden death victory over 3rd
seeds Catch Those, which ultimately got them out of the semi final draw against
Mowers; instead Catch Those found
themselves in this tough semi, and they were unable to create an upset as the
Mowers cruised through the tournament to the final. Second seeds and last year's
runners up Air Badgers 1 faced the challenge from Arctic 1 in the other semi - a
very tight game that went all the way, with Arctic winning by two points in the
end. In the final, the Mowers demonstrated that they are worthy champions -
despite the best efforts of the Arctic players, the superior experience, skill,
tactics and fitness of the Mowers meant they dominated from the start, and run
out worthy winners, final score: 10-4. They have set the benchmark for Junior
Ultimate in the UK in recent years and are currently a class above the rest of
the field. It will be interesting to see watch the shift of power next year when
they are not around any more (most of the players will be too old)
Final Results:
Champions - Mowers (Birkenhead)
Runners Up - Arctic 1 (Sutton Coldfield)
3rd - Catch Those 1 (The Wirral)
4th - Air Badgers 1 (Exeter)
5th - Ocelots (Chester)
6th - 6FFU (Farnborough)
7th - NC Hammer (North Allerton)
8th - Arctic 2
9th - Thundercatch (Gosport) Plate Winners
10th - Arctic 3
11th - Disco Inferno (Warwick)
12th - Air Badgers 2
13th - Strangers With Candy (Brighton)
14th - Catch Those 2
15th - Evolution (Aylesford)
16th - Arctic 4
17th - Air Badgers 3
Spirit of the Game Winners: Arctic 1
SOTG: Over the weekend, each team scored every team they played on a scale from
1 (Unnaceptable spirit/play) through to 6 (Perfect fair play); a score of 6
could only be given if the spirit was perfect AND the game was a close one where
incidents crucial to the final result were handled as the SOTG rule requires.
Average spirit scores at the end of the weekend for each team are as follows:
5.5 - Arctic 1
5.0 - Strangers With Candy
4.8 - Air Badgers 1 and NC Hammer
4.6 - Arctic 2
4.5 - Evolution
4.3 - Air Badgers 2
4.2 - 6FFU and Air Badgers 3 and Arctic 4 and Catch Those 2
4.1 - Thundercatch
4.0 - Disco Inferno and Mowers and Ocelots
3.6 - Catch Those 1
3.5 - Arctic 3
A score of 4 was judged as, 'Above average fair play: the team can be criticised
for its behaviour in the occasional incident. Otherwise the team behaved very
well. It is a good example for other teams'. Each team scored at least 5 at some
point during the tournament.
MVP prizes sponsored by Lookfly (thank you!)
MVP of the final - Penny (Mowers)
Most Valuable Female Player to her team - Sarah Griffiths (Arctic 4 Capt.)

There will be a Capts Meeting at 8:45 before the first game. However just about
all there is to say is either in the information pack or on the schedule, and
some of you are travelling considerable distances and have staggered start
times, do not feel obliged to be there for that if you don't need to.
PLEASE READ THE INFO PACK, PRINT OFF A COPY AND GIVE IT TO YOUR TEAMMATES TO
READ ON THE JOURNEY.
One thing that I forgot to put in the pack was regarding camping. Unless BOTH
(or all) people sleeping in a tent are 18 or over, THERE SHOULD BE NO MIXED
TENTS. As with the alcohol, it's a Junior tournament, it's not appropriate, end
of.

Hi All
Saturday morning is nearly upon us. Here is the schedule as it stands. We may
tinker with it on the Sunday if we can so that the final is the only game in the
last slot, but for now, this is it. I've also attached a load of information
about the tournament. Please get to grips with this, spread it amongst the team,
so folk have a good idea what is what before they arrive.
PEER POOL FORMAT. Seeding a tournament like this is always hard, so first off,
everyone has a chance to win the title. However peer pools work extremely well
when you can seed teams to within about 6 places of their real place, which I
think we can be pretty confident of.. This schedule has been arranged (thanks
Tom) with a minimum of back to back games for any team. The four teams who
requested a late start (before today!) are Catch Those 2 (First Game at 11), and
NC Hammer, Thundercatch and 6FFU (First Game at 12). 2nd and 3rd teams have been
seeded to keep teams from the same club apart as much as poss (there are 2
Arctic teams in the same pool though - because there are 3 in the bottom 10).
GAMES. Will be to a maximum of 13 points. In one hour slots, you will play 55
minutes, and play the point out after the hooter goes. Draws allowed in pool
play. If the scores are then level in knockout, sudden death ensues. There is no
cap. There is no win by two. Make sure you hand in your scores to me or anybody
else who may be chasing them.
SPIRIT OF THE GAME. After each game I would like each team to score their
opposition between 1 and 10 and come and let me know. I will total up each teams
scores over the weekend, and average it out.
I think that's all. I'm bound to have forgotten something....
I'm out now for the evening, but will be on email and phone at times tomorrow if
you have any queries.
PLEASE EVERYONE READ THE INFO PACK!!

Also, don't forget to come out to the field on Friday at 12:40, bringing all
your mates with you. For 30p you can watch the GB girls (well, those that aren't
injured or absent) and a few friends take on the might of a team of teachers...

And some extra details for the glutttons amongst you...
The letter that is going to your parent/guardian reads as follows, and below
that is the email that has gone out the UK Junior scene:
Dear Parent/Guardian
On 30th June and 1st July I am helping to host the UKUA Junior National Outdoor
Championships in conjunction with Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club at the Roger
Smolden Ground, 160 Walmley Road, B76 2QA. A number of teams from around the
country have already confirmed they will be attending to compete for the crown
of Junior National Champions, and your child has expressed an interest in
playing for one of the school¢s Arctic Ultimate teams that will be entered into
the tournament.
Games will run from approximately 0900 to 1700 on both days, and you would be
responsible for arranging for your child to be dropped off at the tournament,
and collected at the end of each day¢s play. There is camping available onsite
for those teams who have a long way to travel and are looking to minimise the
cost of the weekend. However Arthur Terry students are NOT invited to camp as
this would create additional organisational work and supervisory responsibility
for me, both of which would be unnecessary as each student has their own comfy
bed a couple of miles down the road! I would expect all Arctic players to have
left the site by 1900 at the very latest on Saturday. Please make sure you know
what your child is doing on the Saturday night, and that s/he comes back ready
to fully participate in and enjoy the Sunday.
During the days I will be accompanied on site by other members of Arthur Terry
staff to keep an eye on the Arthur Terry students in compliance with LEA
guidelines, so there will be sufficient adult supervision during the weekend.
However there will be certain amount of free time so we expect all students to
act sensibly and not to wander off. I must emphasise this point as the
tournament is on local and familiar territory for our students, and they may be
tempted to think they can come and go as they please. All students must be
dropped off at and collected from the tournament, and other than this may not
leave the site without explicit permission from staff and accompaniment by a
responsible adult. There will be limited security for belongings at the
clubhouse, so I advise nothing that cannot be replaced should be taken. In case
of injury, your child will be checked over by first aid at the tournament, and
may be taken to the nearest hospital where medical advice will be
followed. Please confirm on the reply slip that the medical form I currently
hold remains up do date, or advise me of any changes, including any food
allergies or medication being taken.
I have obtained funds from school to cover the cost of entry to the tournament
and insurance. There are no accommodation or travelling costs. Food will be
available for purchase from the clubhouse during the day, though obviously
students can bring their own provisions with them. Lookfly, a company
specialising in equipment and merchandise related to Ultimate (they make the
school kit), will be at the tournament on the Sunday afternoon, and will have
items for sale. I encourage family and friends to come and watch and support
those they know and the Arctic teams, and watch the best Under 20 teams in
Britain.
Providing you are happy for your child to attend the tournament please sign and
return the attached consent form as soon as possible, and no later than Friday
22nd June. Please also attach relevant medical and consent forms etc if
necessary. If you have any questions please don¢t hesitate to contact me through
the school. I am looking forward to another great weekend!
----- Forwarded Message ----
Hi All
Junior Nationals is taking place on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July this
year. The tournament is taking place in association with Sutton Coldfield Rugby
Club at the Roger Smolden Ground, 160 Walmley Road, Sutton Coldfield, West
Midlands, B76 2QA.
For those teams that need it, camping is available onsite for the Friday and
Saturday nights at the ground, where there is access to toilets and showers at
the clubhouse. Please let me know if you are planning to camp on either or both
nights so I have an idea of numbers. The cost of camping is included in the
entry fee.
Food and drinks will be available to buy during the day from the clubhouse, and
cooked breakfast will be available on the Sunday morning. At the moment assume
you will have to pay for breakfast too, but once all the money is sorted out, if
its possible I will pay a lump sum to the people putting it on include it in the
entry fee. Walmley High Street, which has the usual array of shops and
takeaways, is about half a mile down the road, and a couple of miles further on
is a massive Walmart ASDA superstore. We have access to the clubhouse on the
Saturday evening. I am hoping that the bar will be open, though it may only be
serving soft drinks (not an issue for most of you). I hope to have some kind of
entertainment lined up (this is currently to be confirmed, perhaps a quiz and/or
party of some sort, or MAC line competitions or something). Anyway, we are
usually pretty good at amusing ourselves, and there are plenty of bowling and
cinema options available nearby if you fancy
that.
Some details may change as I hope to meet with Sutton Rugby Club this weekend to
finalise details. I will post out any changes, but do not anticipate there being
(m)any.
IMPORTANT
I'm hoping this is going to be a goood venue to use in terms of facilities and
location, and would like to think it will be one that we use again in future if
all goes well. My first bid to get access to it failed as they were nervous,
particularly about the camping and potential associated problems with behaviour,
damage to site, and risk of litter etc. They are a rugby club, so their concerns
will be based on what they know. A couple of us have had to work hard to assure
them it will be OK. We have had to put a load of measures in place (more details
later and in captains packs etc) to allay their fears, as well as telling them
how the Ultimate community is unlike most other sporting communities, with a
much more developed sense of responsibility. It's your sport, it's your
tournament, it's your reputation. DON'T LET YOURSELVES DOWN!!
If you have any questions please be in touch

Hi All
Hope things are good
As you probably know I am hosting Junior Natioals at Sutton Rugby Club on Sat
30th June and Sunday 1st July. It's nice and local, and it's going to be wicked,
and we're going to rock as we're getting better and better all the time! I want
as many people as possible to play; we can enter as many teams as we like.
By the end of tomorrow I'll have the letters with the details and consent forms
photocopied, so come get one from me. And tell everyone who plays, or has
played, or has expressed an interest in playing, to come get one. I need to know
how many teams to enter, so deadline for getting the consent forms back to me is
going to be Friday 22nd June. Lets be efficient and organised too.
Not everyone is on this egroup so you need to spread the word. It would be handy
if somebody could track down those who aren't on the egroup and persuade thhem
to sign up. We need to get hold of all the Year 11s, inc those like Dec who
still live in the dark ages and don't use email, a bunch of the Year 10s, the
Year 9s and 8s that have started playing this year, the Year 12s like Seth,
Nathan, Mitch, George etc who have said they'd be up for playing, and so on and
so on.
Let's make it huge. Let's dominate in terms of number of teams, amount of noise
and support for each other, quantity and quality of SPIRIT OF THE GAME, and of
course outstanding ulitmate.
Book the dates in your diary. Get a letter from me. Return the consent. Spread
the word.
