Re: [Aspies dugout] Introduction

Hi Angie

I recommend you buy or borrow Asperger's Syndrome by Tony Attwood. Very
informative and easy to read, written in plain English. I ordered mine from
www.amazon.com .

Your intro sounds very similar to other people with Asperger's Syndrome.

You may wish to visit these websites:

Best wishes,
David

Hi David, thank you for your e-mail. I began wondering if I had AS after
reading some personal accounts of having it on a web-site a couple of years ago.
One lady remarked that she felt like a stranger in this world, like she came
from another planet. She described problems she had with relationships. Many
of the things she described had been my experiences in life. I had a hard time
as a kid. I could never figure out other kids and how to interact. I always
felt like I had my nose pressed against the window of the world looking in. I
still feel that way. I know I'm odd. I knew I was different as a child, too.
I remember being 'stuck' on several things as a kid. I remember having to have
whatever was my 'thing' at the time with me. I remember having a crochet gadget
I made that I carried with me everywhere. I remember wearing out a patch of
grass in our front yard doing cartwheels back and forth. I remember being
bullied and made fun of by the girls in my class.
Looking back I'm sure they couldn't make heads or tails of me. I still have few
friends. At work I prefer to stay by myself. Conversations have always puzzled
me and the thought of having to have one for any length of time causes me so
much anxiety that I avoid situations that require 'social' conversations if at
all possible. Most of the things that interest me don't interest my co-workers.
I was checked off as a bit of a tomboy as a child as my interests weren't
terribly girlish. My interests now tend to run crosswise of the things that
tend to interest my female co-workers. I find I have very little to talk about
with the women I work with. I wish this weren't so, but it is. I have wished
so many times for some insight into why I am the way I am. I'm rather terrible
about knowing what people mean sometimes when they are talking to me. I can
tell I'm not getting it by the expressions on the faces of the people I'm
talking to after they hear some of my replies. That is
one of the most dreadful feelings. Knowing I've goofed and said something
that's either weird or wrong and not knowing how to salvage the exchange.

I've not read any of Tony Atwood's books. I would be interested in reading
anything that might give me some help.

I'm from a rural area in Northwest Missouri.

Thanks again for your reply.

Angie

Hello

I'm a 39 year old woman, mother of two, who has never been diagnosed
with Asperger's, but think it's highly probable I do have it.

I'm interested in talking with other people who may have some of the
same struggles I have most days.
