Subject: Treatments For Autism - Pills And Other Options
pbrqwibhvfcy

There are numerous medical options available these days to be able to deal with
many diseases, illnesses, and disorders. You do need to know that there is no
medical cure for autism, but some of the effects of autism can be controlled
medically. Each drug has advantages as well as disadvantages, and the side
effects may not be worth the benefit that they can provide. Your doctor can make
a recommendation on which medication you may want to choose to properly treat
autism, but this disorder varies in each individual which makes choosing the
proper medication more difficult. Each person will react differently depending
on which drugs are used.
First and foremost, safety must be your main concern. Some medications can not
be used by children and people that are under a certain weight requirement. You
will also want to find out how to administer the drug. Some people do better
with pills, some with liquids, and some prefer injections. This is also
important if you will be the one that will be administering the drug. It is also
important to make sure that the dosage is easy to understand. Find out from your
doctor how dangerous the medication is if it is taken by the wrong person. You
will want that information if you have young children in the home. Learn what
you should do if someone takes this medication and shouldn't, it is better to be
safe than sorry.
You will also want to take into consideration any of the possible side effects
of the drug that you are considering. They may very well control some of the
effects of autism such as hyperactivity, aggressive behavior, and
responsiveness, but they may also induce nausea, dizziness, or act as a
sedative. Carefully consider all of your options before beginning any medical
treatment, because you may find yourself using medications to counteract the
side effects of other medications. You will also want to find out what the long
term effects of these drugs will be. Do they create dependency? What is their
effect on someone physically over a long time period? All of this information
can be given to you by your doctor, and should be taken into consideration
before any drug treatment therapy is started.
The internet and your local library are very good places for you to begin to
research the studies that have been done on many of these drugs. Medical
journals and other current publications in the healthcare field are generally
reliable. The information that you get on the internet may not be as reliable as
those other sources, so please double check any information you receive with
your doctor before taking action on the advice you receive in the internet. A
medical professional will also be able to give you literature concerning the
medical options that are available for those that suffer with autism. By doing
the necessary research on the multiple medical options that are available those
who are autistic, you can make better choices for your health and for the health
of your loved ones.

Autism is defined as a neurodevelopmental disorder that reveals itself in a
pronounced abnormal social interaction, patterns of interests, patterns of
behavior, and communication ability. The specific cause of autism is unknown,
some researchers suggest that autism results from genetically-influenced
vulnerabilities to environmental triggers. It is estimated that autism occurs in
as many as one child in 166 in the United States. Families that already have one
autistic child, the odds of a second autistic child mau be as high as one in
twenty. Autism is 3 to 4 times more common in boys. However, girls with the
disorder tend to have more severe symptoms and greater cognitive impairment.
The word autism was first used in the English language by the Swiss psychiatrist
Eugene Bleuler in a 1912 issue of the American Journal of Insanity. It comes
from the Greek word for "self." Bleuler used it to describe the schizophrenic's
seeming difficulty in connecting with other people. However, the classification
of autism did not come into play until the middle of the twentieth century, in
1943 Dr. Leo Kanner of the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore reported eleven
child patients with striking behavioral similarities, and introduced the label
early infantile autism. He suggested "autism" from the Greek (autos), meaning
"self," to describe children lacking interest in other people. Kanner's first
paper on autism was published in (now defunct Journal) The Nervious Child. An
Austrian scientist, Dr. Hans Asperger, made similar observations. however, his
name has since been attached to a different and higher-functioning form of
autism know as Asperger's syndrome. Dr. Asperger's work was not nationally
recognized until after World War II in Germany, and his major work wasn't
translated into English for almost fifty years. The majority of Dr. Asperger
work wasn't widely read until 1997.
Autism may not be physiologically obvious. A complete physical and neurological
assessment will often be part of diagnosing autism. Recently, researchers at the
University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine have found a connection between
autism, abnormal blood vessel function and oxidative stress. The study suggest
that, if researchers can discover more evidence linking decreased blood flow to
the brain and oxidative stress with the pathology of autism, improvement in
therapy could be found.
During my thirty five years experience as a mental health professional I have
had the opportunity to work in several community mental health programs which
exposed me to most mental disorders on a daily basis, including autism. This
environment afforded me precious opportumity to interact directly with parents
and caretakers of children disgnosed with infantile autism. Also, as a
therapist, many mothers of autistic children discussed with me their profound
feelings of guilt, shame, helplessnes, and frustration being the parent of an
autistic child. These mothers said they often feel personally responsible for
their child's autism, and unconsciously blame themselves.
Recently I read an article titles: Autism's Parent Trap, New York Times, OP-ED
page, June 5, 2000. Ms. McGovern, the author, aim to caution parents concerning
the popular, but unrealistic and determination of their abilities to enable an
autistic child to lead a normal life is clearly evident: And the setting for the
parent trap. To make the connection between unrealistic expectation of recovery
from autism and possible devastating outcome, Ms. McGovern reported on three
cases in which parents were accused of killing their autistic children, these
cases occurred in England and the United States within a short span of one
month: In one case the mother committed suicide, as well. In this instance, for
three children with autism, the disconnect between parental expectation and
limited progress may have been lethal. The occurrence of parent killing their
maladjusted child, and often themself, is not as rare as we may think.
The New York Times article triggered my desire to learn why parents, mostly
mothers, experienced such intense negative emotions that would cause them to
kill their autistic children, and often themselves; as an act of love. Is there
a social connection that cause parents, especially mothers, of children born
with birth defects or developmental disabilities to experience such extreme
shame and guilt?
If you are the mother of a child diagnosed with autism you already know that no
matter what you do for or with your child, you still feel guilty. You feel
guilty primarily because no one know the causes or have a cures of autism.
Therefore, you may feel that anything you did could be your fault, or did you do
everything that would help. You know that your child did not acquire autism for
the lack of motherly love. However, you are not so certain about that small
glass of wine you had when you were pregnant. And what about the vaccines you
allowed the doctor your child? Since no one can tell you what causes autism, it
is very easy to decide that it was your fault.
Let's face it, society has a rich history of blaming mothers for imperfect
children; be it psychological, physiological, or sociological it is always the
mother's fault. After all, it wasn't very long ago that mothers were blamed for
their sons' homosexuality. And during the 1940's the term refrigerator mother
was coined as a label for mothers of autistic children. These mothers were often
blamed for their children's atypical behaviors. Mental health professionals
suggested that autism was the product of mothers who were cold, distance and
rejecting, depriving the child an opportunity to bond property.
Therefore, having a greater understanding of the social foundation which
motherhood is erected it requires no great leap to comprehend why women blame
themselves and experience profound guilt when they give birth to children with
life-long defects. Culture teaches mothers that when something goes wrong with
the kids or in the family its usually their fault. Many mothers internalized the
social expectations that they must do everything, and do it very well, and when
they fail to meet these high expectations; they feel guilty. The emotion of
guilt is not innate, or a part of the human gene pool, but guilt can be
passed-down from generation to generation. I am not suggesting that women are
hard-wired to feel guilt. However, women are socialized very early as nurturers,
and to accept responsibility for the happiness of others. While this is an
impossible and unreasonable task. Yet, many women experience it as their goal
and feel guilty even when they have done their best.

Subject: Sensory Integration and Autism Does it Work?
pbrqwibhvfcy
Offline Offline

Not all children with autism have sensory problems among their symptoms, but
when present they are among the first to become noticeable. Sensory issues can
range from being hypersensitive or, at the other end of the scale, having a lack
of response to many types of stimulation. However by employing sensory
integration and autism therapy these issues can be managed.
The range of sensory integration (SI) issues children with autism face varies
dramatically from child to child. Some children are unable to tolerate any loud
or unusual noise. Textures of foods and fabrics may be extremely irritating.
Something as simple as a clothing label can feel to an autistic child like
insects crawling over their skin. For these hypersensitive children anything
remotely out of the ordinary, such as a loud family gathering with lots of
hugging and kissing, can be too much for senses to manage.
On the other end of the spectrum, some autistic children show practically no
response to anything at all. Loud noises are ignored, events or actions that
might have an impact on anyone else will pass seemingly unnoticed.
Though it is not always the case, some classic autistic behaviors can be
attributed to the sensory issues themselves.
Some children will deal with feelings of over-stimulation by flapping hands,
rocking their bodies, and even walking in different ways. Those behaviors may
seem odd, however when you consider that their senses are overloaded, those
actions make a great deal more sense.
It is somewhat logical if an autistic child is over-stimulated, he or she might
alter how they do things in order to try to deal with whatever it is that is
proving to be overwhelming. These same actions might also be carried out in
order to seek sensations that are desired, but not present.
The main objective of sensory integration and autism therapy is to make their
environment tolerable and even pleasant for the child if at all possible. Most
sensory integration therapy is incorporated within occupational therapy.
There are many types of activities that are integrated into the therapy to
expose the child to sensations of all types; including brushing the skin,
motions and movements, music or other auditory stimuli.
The child is exposed over and over again in a controlled environment in the hope
that this exposure will help them learn to process the information without
becoming startled or overwhelmed. If ST therapy is successful, the child usually
becomes calmer and more in control of their actions and other problems, such as
tantrums, may also be diminished.
There is debate over how effective SI therapy can be. There are several studies
that demonstrate the therapy works well and just as many have illustrated that
the therapy has no positive impact and in some case a negative effect.
Some of the controversy with this therapy may lie with unspecialized health care
professionals attempting to provide the therapy without enough experience or
training. Another point to bear in mind that as each child and each case of
autism is different, so the outcome will never be the same for any two children,
therefore it is very hard to compare outcomes between two or more children.
When considering sensory integration and autism therapy for your child it is
important to speak to a qualified doctor about the potential benefits and
setbacks that may occur. Some children with autism simply don't need this form
of therapy, while others will not respond to it at all. It is the individual
situation that will dictate the final result.

Subject: Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) - What is Life Like on the Autism Spectrum?
pbrqwibhvfcy
Offline Offline

Autism Spectrum disorders (ASD) is also known as autism spectrum conditions
(ASC) or the autism spectrum. The autism spectrum is a variety of
psychological abnormalities in social interactions and communication. It may
also be displayed as severely restricted interests and exceedingly repetitive
behavior. Autism is one of the five autism spectrum disorders.
These disorders are very common in the pediatric population. Recent studies show
that as many as 3.4 in every 1000 children had autism. When the diagnosis is
made early on, the sooner treatment interventions can begin. Many children
however, are misdiagnosed and remain undiagnosed until after kindergarten.
Children with autism spectrum disorders show signs of problems with social
interaction, communication and repetition. Children may also display signs of
sensory issues and trouble with certain noises. They may be found covering their
ears or responding to everyday noises differently from others would. Each child
will present problems differently so each case needs to be treated individually.
Patterns of development for children with these disorders are often different.

Babies are very social individuals from early on in life. Children on the
spectrum have difficulty with human interaction and oftentimes prefer to be
alone. Children with ASD are usually interpret more slowly what others are
thinking and feeling. Social cues like smiling or winking have little meaning
and the social world may seem bewildering. Many believe that children on the
spectrum do not display affection as much either. This is a controversial
issue and depends on the child involved as well as the extent to which they
present problems.
Some common problems associated with autism sensory disorders are sensory
problems, seizure, fragile X syndrome, mental retardation and tuberous
sclerosis. Diagnosing problems early on are critical to optimizing care. If
during a "well child" check-up a doctor sees any indication, further evaluation
is warranted.

Subject: What IEP Teams Need to Consider in Seven Areas - For Children With Autism
pbrqwibhvfcy
Offline Offline

Do you have a child with autism that receives special education services? Would
you like to know what information that needs to be discussed in 7 areas to
benefit your child's education? This article will discuss what information
special education IEP teams need to discuss in seven areas to determine what
services a child with autism needs.
The seven areas are:
1. Nonverbal and verbal communication needs of the child, 2. social interaction
skills of the child, 3. educational needs caused by sensory integration
disorder, 4. needs caused by rigidity and resistance to change, 5. needs
resulting from engagement in repetitive activities, 6. needs for positive
behavioral interventions and plans for negative behavior that interferes with
the child's education, 7. any other need the child has that negatively affects
their education.
Consideration for #1 Verbal and nonverbal communication needs of a child with
autism. A. What the child's current level of communication is. This can be
determined by a speech language evaluation. B. What system of communication is
effective for the child. C. The child's ability to use and understand non-verbal
communication (facial expression, eye gaze, body language). D. Alternative
assistive technology devices that could help the child with their communication
needs.
Consideration for #2 Need for social interaction skills for the child A. Types
of social interactions the child is capable of. B. The child's ability to
respond appropriately to the social approach of others.
Consideration for #3 Needs resulting from sensory integration disorder A.
Tactile: Does the child have a need for a higher level of input in tactile
experiences. B. Sound: How does the child respond to loud noises? C.
Smell/taste: Is the child affected by certain smells? Does the child avoid
certain foods due to the texture?
Consideration 4: Needs caused by rigidity and resistance to change A. How the
child reacts to changes in environment or schedule? How to prepare for
transitions with visual supports and timers. B. An individual visual schedule
written, pictures, photos etc C. Any other supports needed for successful
transitions from activity to activity
Consideration 5: Needs resulting from engagement in repetitive activities A.
Determine the function of the behavior to the child. B. Determine the extent to
which the behavior interferes with the child's education. C. The use of positive
behavioral supports to encourage participation in social activities.
Consideration 6: Needs for positive behavioral interventions and plans for
negative behavior that interferes with the child's education A. Discuss the need
for a functional behavioral assessment (FBA) to determine what function the
behavior has for the child. B. Use the FBA to develop a positive behavioral plan
and supports for the child. Also discuss needed teaching of appropriate
replacement behaviors.
Consideration 7: Any other need the child has that negatively affects their
education. A. Medical needs that affect the child's education B. Organizational
needs C. Direct instruction for learning new skills
By understanding what should be discussed for your child with autism at their
IEP meeting, you will be able to be an active participant in the IEP process. By
advocating for your child you will help them benefit from their education.

Hullo everybody!

I used to post here on AspiesDugout quite a bit but for some reason
in the last year this particular site has been very quiet.

If you are in the UK and would like to see an Asperger site that is
quite active try the following link...

http://www.aspievillage.org.uk/bb3portal.php?
sid=65e0774b48667553716ff6b9ecd37aef

... or just put "AspieVillage" in your search engine.

It is a well moderated site with interesting threads and loads of
practical advice from those of us on the spectrum. I
am "chicken_55" in AspieVillage; "Chicken" because I like hens and
my grandad used to have a smallholding with free-range chickens
everywhere.

Hope to see you there,

Love, Light and Peace

Hello. My special interests are horses and Ferrys. By ferrys I mean
the big ships that sail the Irish Sea. My user name comes from the
ferry that sailed on the Belfast Liverpool route between 1997 and
2004. Now she sails on the Dublin liverpool route as the Dublin
Viking. I love the Ulysses she is the best. I live near the port of
Larne where P&O are based. The magnificent but workmanlike duo the
European Causeway and European Highlander sail from here to Cairnryan.
I ride horses at Riding for the Disabled establishments and am looking
for a new one. I have won prizes at regional RDA dressage
competitions, and would like to represent Ireland. I am a big fan of
the races and enjoy the jumps and Flat seasons. Ruby Walsh and Tony
McCoy are my favourites and I think Sam Thomas and Tom Scudamore are
going to be the next top jockeys in the future. That ferry Riverdance,
or the Michael Flatley ferrys we called them once sailed from Larne to
Heysham a few years back.
yours

Hello Everyone. I am a female that has Autism- The Aspergers Form. I
am being treated meanly by people because I am looking for both postal
mail and e-mail pen pals that will accept short letters with questions
like for example:
1. Do you have any pets?
2. Do you like music?
3. What type of music do you like?
And people do not want to be my pen pal.

My hobbies include letter writeing, listening to music and makeing new
friends. My interests include pets, sports, camping and movies.

If you would like to be a postal mail pen pal PLEASE PROVIDE A STAMP
so I can write you back because I live in a group home that has told
me that I have no money to get stamps.

address. Please let me know if you want to be a postal mail pen pal or
an e-mail pen pal.

Also I would prefer to have some postal mail ONLY pen pals to fill up
my mail box because My internet goes out everytime it rains and
