A definite Yes from Me!
I teach at an independent school and we have elected to move to Ed Excel IGCSEs in Science. One problem with that is that there is NO Earth and Space section in the syllabus. Astronomy GCSE thus feels a real gap for us. Otherwise our pupils can hit Cosmology at A2 without ever thinking about what Stars and Galaxies are!

GCSE Astronomy [Scanned]
Dear All
EdExcel are consulting on the future of the GCSE Astronomy course. I assume that we'd want to put in a strong 'yes' to its continuation? I'm happy to put something together if you wish.
Regards
Robert

Dear Robert,
That would be fantastic! Thanks very much.
When we start to properly redevelop the specification we will be consulting with many interested parties.
Thanks
Sarah Harrison

Happy to help - I remember organising the campaign to persuade EdExcel to continue the course a few years ago. I'm about to move on from the ROG to take up a new post at the Royal Astronomical Society, so will try to get them to write in support too. I've copied this to our director and senior staff in the Learning team who may wish to comment before anything formal is sent out.
I guess that as the ROG is the largest provider of this course in the UK, we should take a view, if only from the perspective of being a large provider. In the last few years we've increased the provision from one class to five, a level of expansion I didn't anticipate. I'd also hope that with the numbers entered nationally crossing 1000 for the first time, that the case for continuing is even stronger than it was at the start of the decade.
Would it be helpful if I wrote something as President of the Association for Astronomy Education too?
Regards
Robert

We are starting to think about the redevelopment of the GCSE Astronomy, at Edexcel, and we need to present a business case for this to our senior managers. Could I ask you for a letter or email of support to continue with the GCSE Astronomy. This will be very helpful and should convince our managers that it is vital to continue with GCSE Astronomy.
Many thanks
Sarah Harrison
