(With a mild heat of embarrassment I post my first message/reply to
this group)
Do non-believers need a symbol?
I agree that atheism is not a doctrine in the way that religions are,
and has no enforced worldview. Nonetheless, there is something that
binds us together, even if only definable as a negative, and the
human desire to demonstrate attachment to like-minded groups is
genuine.
That said, the question of what image to pick is unbelievably tough.
A circle is a nice idea but then again gives the impression of a
distinctively perfected, dare I say Classical, worldview. It is not
chaotic or ambiguous. It has its centre and its edge defined
(although its centre is nothing; that I like). I'd like to suggest a
tree (a small oak would make a smashing lapel-badge) but fear
reducing the whole discussion to a competition to see who can
nominate the "most feelgood" symbol. After all, what is more eco-
cuddly and easy on the eye than a tree? (Certainly not a cross).
Please treat this newcomer nicely until I've had a few days to settle
in. Then lash out, you have my (conditionnal) permission.
Mr Dan
