Not Athiests!
They would complain that their technical inability to move out of the way is due
to the dragging back of progress, caused by the dead weight of the religionists
being always in the way. For the same reason, the ability to spot the comet
earlier and the ability to stop it afterward, are still too backward because the
religionists diverted too much energy away from making progress.
As for praying? Same foolishness that renders us a sitting-duck to the comet.
Being expected to pray is just insulting. Anyway, what can 'prey' mean to an
Atheist? Prey to what? The only option left to them is to curse themselves for
not having rolled-back religionist interference earlier.
Do you think that the absence of belief in the existence of any god is some kind
of arrogant bravado which would quickly evaporate in the face of an inescapable
crisis? All the Athiests I have ever known are NOT in the does-not-exist
position simply because they have not been challenged yet. Quite a few are
Atheist because they HAVE been challenged - by both believers and non. There are
some who do not just believe that there is not any god that exists, but that
there CANNOT be. Would you know how to counter this conclusion?
Why assume the end point must be belief? Can you imagine the opposite - a
carefree daliance with a residual fairy-story, but when a crisis suddenly
appears, those same people put away their comfort-myths and get down to seeing
if they can actually do something themselves. It is the non-believers who, as
they always have (and will), have the wherewithal to get busy, despite the
considerable hinderance of having to step over the cowering and tear-soaked
bodies of the faithful!

let us say there is no god
and say a huge comet is heading towards the earth on a

then people start wishing they were on another planet or they
start wishing for some good power/powerful being (a god) to save them.
