There is a Bristol Humanist Group. Perhaps that was the one you tried?
(Nearest I could find to North West Wiltshire or Avon.) There is a list
of local groups on the BHA website. Mike Lake of Derbyshire Secularists
is trying to get people to set up Secular groups, on behalf of the NSS,
though I don't know what sort of response he is getting.
The BHA does include Atheism, or Agnosticism, as part of its definition
of Humanism, but you are right that members of Humanist groups tend not
to be militantly atheistic. Perhaps you should join a group and try to
stir them up to a bit more active anti-religious activity.
