Health and Wellbeing Project

The Health and Wellbeing Scheme is a 12 month pilot project co-ordinated by Wigan and Leigh Housing and funded by Supporting People.  Starting in January 2009, the project aims to further increase the quality of life of Older people across all tenures of the Hag Fold and Atherton area through the development of a programme of stimulating events and activities and by working in partnership with other agencies. The service has been set up to:

·        ensure that people are receiving the benefits they are entitled to by working with advice agencies in the Wigan area.

·        offer a range of different organised social activities and events which are aimed at increasing enjoyment, leisure and learning opportunities.

·        offer healthy living initiatives such as exercise

·        provide information to older people on staying safe and secure within their homes to reduce the risk of accidents and increase their independence.

·        offer opportunities to older people to get involved and make a positive contribution.

Subject: Re: [atherton] ARA annual general wash out

Hi All
Following on from Steve's Comments I would like to say first thank's to
Steve for bringing this to the site as I may not have said anything but
carried on.
I also from the ARA spend a lot of time on the Township meetings which does
give us a voice in to wigan and in turn then know what's going on.
Over the last month or so I have attended meetings to do with the change of
doctors hours and our very own Atherton Clinic is being refurbish to house a
new doctor who will offer more services in house and longer hours 8am to 8pm
The other meetings one was to do with transport and inner city Charges
(congestion charge) discussing better travel links more parking at station
better busses yellow busses for children going to school and so on.
Our parks and recreation facility's with Douglas park having play equipment
once again after there being none for 15 yrs.
So all this is very important to our town without the ARA I could not attend
Only yesterday rather than be a associate member I have applied for full
membership so I have a vote on items discussed.
If we don't get to carry on with the ARA then we don't have a say before
things to our town are done.
This E-Mail is only a small part of what we do so I hope you can spend a
couple of hours at our next AGM (General Meeting).

In our Constitution we need 17 people to make it happen.
Reminder

Please try to attend.
Thank you.

Subject: [atherton] ARA annual general wash out

I went to the ARA AGM last night and couldn't believe what I saw.
Present were

Alan Birtles (acting Chairman)
Jean Clark (acting Secretary)
Two Councillors
and me!

Now without shouting too loud at everyone, what the ferkin hell is
going on here?
The ARA was set up to benefit all the residents of Atherton, so that
means a sizeable proportion of the people reading this post.
It is an organisation that so many of you wanted when it was first
conceived, but that same organisation can only continue if it is
supported by the people that wanted it in the first place.
Alan and Jean have worked their tripes off on our behalf and quite
frankly, deserve a lot more support than they are getting at the moment.

The ARA is still very much in its infancy and it is crucial to its
development that as many people as possible support it in order for it
to get succesfully off the ground.
I appreciate that some people may have had genuine reasons why they
couldn't attend. There have been General meetings in the past which I
couldn't attend. These things happen, but to witness such apathy made
me ashamed to be an Athertonian.
The constitution says that there must be at least 17 people present to
form a quorum and that clearly didn't happen last night, so no meeting
took place.

The upshot of all this is that there will have to be another AGM in two
months time. If the apathy continues and a quorum cannot be formed at
the next meeting, the ARA.....YOUR ARA...will be in serious trouble and
may have to be wound up.
Alan and Jean need everyones support in all this and we owe it to them,
and to our town to give them that support.

So get off your FRIGGIN ARSES next time! (I promised Alan I wouldn't
shout but I'm SO annoyed)

You wanted the ARA. You've got the ARA. Now start to support it or it
will become history faster then Wiggin Metro can erect a no entry sign.

Steve (totally disgusted)

Hi all I am attending a Traffic meeting shortly but for now had the chance today to get a true report on lee street he it is.

Mr Birtles,

Thank you for your e-mail dated 29th August 2008.

As you are aware we are in the process of introducing traffic calming on Hamilton Street, Atherton.

There is still work outstanding to construct a speed table at the junction of Hamilton Street and Lee Street.

The reason that Hamilton street was selected for traffic calming is the fact that a large number of accidents had been recorded where injuries had been sustained and a speed survey indicate that many vehicles were travelling well in excess of the speed limit. The presence of two schools and a park along Hamilton Street is likely to generate high numbers of school children using and crossing this road.

Speed tables are being constructed at the Hamilton Street junctions' with Lee Street and Morley Street, which as well as slowing traffic down will assist the school crossing patrol at both locations.

Observations and evidence  had shown that a high number of vehicles were over-running the pavement when turning left from Hamilton Street into Lee Street. We felt that this problem would increase once the speed table was installed, hence increasing the danger to pedestrians and school children. The solution we arrived at was to make Lee Street one-way in a southbound direction from Tyldesley Road to Hamilton Street.
End

Thank You
I hope this helps for everone to understand why,

Yours sincerely

Big Al founded this site, and he will be dearly missed. What can one
say, he was such a great person. Charitable to the extreme. He was the
sort of guy it was a pleasure to say "yes" to. Donating to his efforts
was so pleasurable. "You're a star" he would say, no matter what the
donation amounted to - well Big Al, if I'm a star, you were the
sunshine that made me twinkle. RIP lad, I am certainly a better person
for knowing you.
Gordon.

Hi All
Seem like I have got some of it wrong. I thought I had paid attention to detail.
So to put it straight here is the E-Mail sent to put me correct.
Subject: RE: [atherton] Re: Howe Bridge- The Bad and Beautiful

Alan,

I am sorry but you have got some of this wrong ....The money came mostly from Awards for All then from Brighter Borough Funding from Atherleigh Cllrs Aldred, Turnock and self and a smaller amount came from Wigan and Leigh Housing  - The residents have not paid for it themselves -       -    by way of explanation -   myself and their treasurer put the bids together -  The Bridgers would be upset by the "no thanks"  because they have received thanks and praise from their residents. Everyone is really pleased and I have been thanked for the part I played on the bid the planting days and ordering and filling the panniers.

.... the "because no one else would pay for them" about town centre baskets  sounds not quite right it was because there was no where money could be found for a second year of "free" baskets ...the traders were offered them free last year      -     I am  concerned that business people may feel affronted !

The Council have played their part by watering the panniers in Howe Bridge which is quite expensive for 30 panniers. Appox £3,000 for the year

and finally - The "paint job" does not belong to the council - however the property does and as landlords and as conservation officers they have asked for the paint to be removed which is not an easy task  - which is  removing an oil based paint from porous bricks.

I just hope you message has not got anyone's back up. Sue thank you for pointing out what's what.
It was not meant to upset but to inform those that don't know.
No I was not trying to get backs up but put the record straight and was not meant to upset anyone.

Hi All
To put the Record straight.
First of all the Bridgers have paid for all hanging baskets Leigh Road Howe Bridge Planters that look so good.
Second the council are only watering them they are playing no other part.
The Bridgers have done all the work even placing hanging brackets for those who could not fix them self's
The Bridgers have done all this work unpaid and to date with no thanks.
Well let's put that straight as well.
Terry and all the bridgers are great people and I would on behalf of ARA Atherton Residents Assoiation like to say a big thank you to them all for there efforts.
What a credit to them all Howe Bridge is and all the way from the Punch Bowl to the old LUT site.
But it does not end there they have also paid for the ones in ATHERTON TOWN CENTRE. (because no one else would)
Then over the weekend some little could not care has damaged some of the hanging baskets.
The Chippy.
Now to that Paint Job it does belong to the council and they have told him that one it's a conservation Area and it's up to him to clean it off.
It's there's and he should not have done this with out permission.

Once again I would like to say all this information can be yours free if only you attend the ARA Atherton Residents Assoiation Meeting,
The next one is next Tuesday the 5th August 7.30pm St Richards Club. Crab tree lane, Stanley street, Mayfield street.
Once again it's thanks to the Bridgers for all there efforts.
