Hi Marie,

it's taken me  a while to get back to my email. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to read what you have collected on the 103 Squadron. I am most interested in the various Lancaster squadrons during the war and any personal accounts their crews kept of their various flights - it is living history through the eyes of those who were there.

Thank you

Niall McLaughlin

Marie,

you have probably done more rsearch than I can imagine on the 103rd squadron, but just a thought. Have you researched the on line catalogue of photos from the Imperial war museum?   http://collections. iwm.org.uk/

You can try to search by aircraft number or squadron - I know its a lnog shot but stranger things have happened.  If you get Flypast magazine, they have an extensive history of various squadrons and may be worth a call to their research dept to ask if they might know any thing or could recommend somewhere else?

I would very much love to read about  what you have already collected, infact if you have enough information the Flypast folks may even do an article on them as a featured crew as they frequently do.   do not have a military connection but rather a WW2 interest in aviation - specifically the Lancaster - the finest of all bombers.

Good Luck,

Hi Their, I wonder if anyone can help me find out more information on my Uncle who was with 103 squadron ! he was based at Elsham Wolds between 1941 to 1943 when he and he's crew all died in Ahrensfelde just outside Berlin. I know him & he's crew are all buried at the Berlin war cemetary, but i'm looking for any family members who might still be alive to-day who might have any photo's or information about him or he's crew as i have managed to colate quiet a bit of information on him so far but i am lacking any photo's of him and he's crew and their plane.

Also if anyone else would like any information that i do have on 103 squadron or my uncles crew i would gladly pass on.

many thanks,

Marie ( Neice).

Hi there ND704 was a Lancaster III

"Demand for the Rolls Royce Merlin engine constantly threatened to outstrip supply. One solution was the manufacture of Merlin engines by the Packard motor company in America. These Packard Merlins were used in a variety of aircraft, but perhaps the biggest consumer was the Lancaster III, of which 3,039 were built (requiring over 12,000 engines). The use of the Packard Merlin 28, capable of delivering 1,420 hp at take-off was the only difference between the Mk I and the Mk III. As would be expected, the performance of the Packard Merlin powered Lancaster was very close to that of Rolls Royce powered aircraft. Many RAF Squadrons used both types. The only exception was that the Packard Merlin was slightly more likely to overheat during take off and landing, making it less suitable for use in training units. " H2S was used for the first time on January 30th 1943 initially on stirlings and halifax's i cant find any information concerning ND704 that specifically links it to H2S only that the plane was lost while with 635 Sqd on 24/03/44 (see link below)

I hope this information may be of some help for you

Unlucky, but I will have a look in my scrap box because I built 2 tornados not long ago but I have an uneasy feeling they were 1/72. However, I will let you know in due course if I have any parts for your tornado.

As for the Lancaster project: The link to http://www.lancasterfm159.freeservers.com/ is very useful, thanks for the referral. It will be put to good use.

God Morning David.
Latest project for me was a 1/32 scale toronado that I picked up form a flea
market as it was partially built but came with extra parts. Sadly it is
missing one of the drop tanks from the wings. I have built many kits over
the years but I am also involved in the real thing as I emtnioned to you.
Two lancs I work with are here:
www.lancasterfm159.freeservers.com
and
www.lancasterfm212.freeservers.com
The website for the lancaster explored has some additional information on
it.

I haven’t seen the DVD but if you recommend it as a wealth of info then I will acquire a copy from my local library. Have you got any more information about the DVD other than the name: Lancaster explored.

What, if any projects are you currently undertaking. It’s not clear from my previous correspondence if you build scale kits or not.

I am currently trying to upload pictures to send to you of the 1/72 lanc. Which I think you will find interesting to view my particular approach to modelling with strip plastic.

Yes there is but we intend to scratch build the whole internals and only keep the original WINGS, FUESLAGE and TAIL. With every other piece either being scratched built or the existing pieces being manipulated.

The primary proposal is that the wheels with suspension struts will be taken from the kit and modified. Cockpit, undercarriage with dam buster bomb and the internals such as navigators post and all gunner positions will defiantly be scratched built and the other parts will be decided upon arrival of the kit, which has not yet been purchased. The early prototype built in 2006 did exploit a 1/72 kit to its full potential. However, internal structure or detail was not put in place nor built. Further more, the builder found that 1/72 finished product did not do justice to the time and effort that would be put into the later 1/24 kit. Hence the reason for building the super detailed Lancaster in 1/24.

Information found on the internet detailing pictures of navigator posts and a total walk through picture by picture is currently in my possession so at least I have some thing to work with.

yours sincerely

though? Normally you only see a 1/48 scale dambuster lanc.

Hi everyone.

This was posted by Jeff Rankin-Lowe on the Wrecks and Relics mailing

(for those not familiar with this group, it covers preserved and
retired aircraft, however, there are a fair few photographs posted on
it, so it is best to have ADSL or similar if you are going to join.
It is located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wrecksnwrelics/ )

Warplane lands after 40 years

Jordan Press
Windsor Star
Friday, May 27, 2005

Standing in Jackson Park Thursday morning, Bill Hutchinson looked up
at
the plane he once flew.

"I flew these birds in the Second World War," the 81-year-old veteran
said staring at Windsor's Lancaster. "Once you got them up into
cruising
conditions, you could fly them hands off."

They flew easily and landed smoothly -- you just didn't want to go too
fast or you'd wear the brakes out, Hutchinson said with a laugh.

The crews surrounding one of the last remaining Lancasters in the
world
must have heard him. Just before 10:15 am, two giant cranes slowly
lifted the 60-year-old plane off its 4.85-metre pillar, slowly turned
it
due south and then gently touched down the 15,000 kilogram plane.

The Lancaster stood on its landing gear for the first time since 1965.

The whole operation took no more than 10 minutes.

"It's about time it comes down," said Brent Soucie, who came with his
wife Jennifer and eight-month-old son Cameron to the event. "I think
it
should be preserved."

"It's a piece of history," Jennifer told her son, holding him in her
arms.

The Avro Lancaster FM212 -- one of 17 (eight of which are in Canada)
that survived from the 7377 built -- landed after serving as a
memorial
to the 556 Royal Canadian Air Force members from Windsor who lost
their
lives in the Second World War.

"To the veterans, this plane represents more than just a memorial,"
said
Dennis Whitehead, president of the Windsor Air Force Club. "It is a
bridge...a bridge back to the past."

Even the cranes were a link to the past. Moir Crane Equipment Ltd.,
the
firm that originally installed the bomber in Jackson Park, provided
two
cranes to bring the plane down for free.

Around the plane, hundreds of people crowded, some standing, others
sitting on lawn chairs or towels on top of newly-cut grass. There were
those who lived through the Second World War, those who grew up after
the war and took an interest in the plane and students who came from
Kennedy high school next door to watch the deteriorating plane came
down.

"I have mixed emotions about that," Hutchinson said about the city
removing the plane. "I hate to see it come down, but it's the thing to
do."

In 1995, the city hired an aviation engineering firm to regularly
inspect the plane. Those inspections said exposure to the elements had
deteriorated the vintage aircraft. It was decided it needed to be in a
climate-controlled indoor location.

"It's important to preserve it," said 68-year-old Jim Cunningham,
sitting with his grandson Matthew Edwards, 4. "If it stays up there,
I'm
afraid it's not going to last too much longer."

The plane was built in Malton, Ont., in July 1945 and never flew
during
the war. Instead, it conducted photographic research of the Canadian
Arctic from 1956 to 1961, logging more than 8069 hours in the air.

The plan is to eventually have the plane on display at a museum and
use
it as a teaching tool, said S. Michael Beale, president of the
Canadian
Historical Aircraft Association.

Beginning Saturday, the Lancaster will be on display in the park and
open for tours from 9 am to 9 pm until June 10th. After that, the
wings
and engines will be disassembled and the Lancaster will be moved to a
hangar near the airport where it will be refurbished.

After the ceremony, some students stayed around, having got out of
class
to watch the plane's landing.

"We wanted to go. I used to walk by here," said Alix Jee, 16. Her
friend
Katie Fisher added: "There's a hole in Jackson Park."

This was posted to the Vintage and Warbirds list by
Jeff rankin-Lowe.

I hope that they get plenty of support.

================================

Attention World Wide Avro Lancaster Enthusiasts!!!

This coming Tuesday February 22nd, I will finally be
meeting with the
Mayor, City of Edmundston officials and interested
local parties to
discuss the short and long term
preservation/restoration of Avro
Lancaster KB882.

As most of you know KB882 is a bona fide warbird with
several bombing
missions on her logs. After war time service, she went
on to fly for an
additional twelve years with 408 "Goose" Squadron. Now
it's time for us
to take care of the old girl, thus ensuring that KB882
will be here for
another 60 years and beyond.

I have been requested by the Mayor's Office to
illustrate to them how
much support they may receive from International
Aviation and Lancaster
enthusiasts. Here's your opportunity to get on board
and let the people
of Edmundston know just how important their Lancaster
is!

Any messages of support can be directed to my e-mail
address
(lancasterkb882@...) and/or the Edmundston
e-mail address
(Communication@...).

I hope to hear from as many of you as possible -- it

I was in Florida in January and got to the Fantasy of Flight museum.
It's worth the trip, and I got the answer to one of my Lancaster
questions. Where is KB976?
I posted a couple of photos in the photos section showing it's
location......
If anyone's interested I can post a few more photos and links to
other Lancs that are still around, perhaps this will become THE
source for Lancaster news ont he web!

take care
Jim

Just got my membership card for the Toronto Aerospace Museum, who are
in the process of restoring FM104 to static display. Hope to be able
to help actually work on a Lancaster soon.....

Hi Col.

It's good to see that you got there in time to save the books and notes.  What were the other types that he flew in?  Did he also have any photographs of the aircraft?
