Just in case anybody finds this at a later date - I thought I'd update
with the solution. Having decided that it might be worth a custom
solution I had a look inside the diverter myself - and found that two
ordinary 3/4" tap washers (99p) can do the job. It's now working.

The diverter between the bath and shower has gone. It feels like it's a type of washer inside the tap body - but Dave Welsh (an experienced Barbican Plumber)...
