You've traveled up ten thousand steps in search of the Dharma.
So many long days in the archives, copying, copying.
The gravity of the Tang and the profundity of the Sung
make heavy baggage.
Here! I've picked you a bunch of wildflowers.
Their meaning is the same
but they're much easier to carry.

Dear Friends

I have been in contact with Dirk from Bodhicharya London about their development of the SAFETY NET, this area of pastoral care interests me and many years ago we had a brain storming at the Bodhi Tree, Havant and I remember writing pastoral care on this sheet which was on the floor!!

Is there an appetite to follow in similar footsteps to Bodhicharya London set up of the SAFETY NET
and set up a Bodhicharya south network or break it down to Sussex, Southampton, Somerset or whatever?

Please let me know if you are interested in exploring this idea more and I am only too willing to give it all I can

Thank you

Dear fellow Sangha members

You may remember hearing some talk about a ‘Safety Net’ some time ago but if like me you have forgotten exactly what that talk was all about please allow me to refresh your memory.

The Safety Net will be a network within the Bodhicharya London Sangha that will provide support for people in times of personal need when other support is not forthcoming. The support could range from helping someone when they are sick by simply providing practical support like doing the shopping or helping in the garden, it could involve providing emotional support for someone experiencing a difficult time in their life or it could simply be a way for people to have someone to talk to peridocially in a world that often seems so busy, impersonal and lonely at times.

As people interested in Buddha Dharma participating in the Safety Net would provide us with an opportunity to engage with it in a practical, meaningful and beneficial way for all concerned.  The motivation behind the Safety Net is one of Loving Kindness and Compassion for all Sentient Beings joined with the realisation of the Interconnected nature we all share.  The first Paramita or ‘perfection’ that is to be cultivated in the Mahayana tradition is Generosity.  Generosity can take many forms and sometimes it can be more difficult to give of ourselves than of material things but when we do so we realise the instant and long term benefits.  The instant benefit for the helper is the feeling of satisfaction that is gained by helping another in a time of need and the benefit for the recipient is the solving of their problem or the alleviation of their suffering.  The long term benefits are reduced Self-Cherishing, the source of all our disatisfaction and a cultivation of greater and greater Compassion towards all fellow Sentient Beings that in the end brings constant Joy and Satisfaction into our lives and those around us.

Tim has very kindly and painstakingly developed a system that will enable the Safety Net to function, however we firstly need to identify WHO in the group would like to and be potentially able to offer support to others within the group.

In order for Tim to get the Safety Net off of the ground and onto its feet he needs a few moments of your time to respond to the following questionnaire. The information you provide will be entered into the database Tim has developed that will initially show your location and what you are willing to help with so that it will be easier for those who will coordinate the Safety Net to match people with those who need help or support and put them in contact with one another.

It is also important that we additionally recognise that some people may not wish to be a part of this support network at all (either as a potential helper or as a recipient) which is entirely a personal choice and as such this will be respected. If this is the case we would be grateful if you could indicate this and respond accordingly where asked.

Please EMAIL only the response back to: safetynetreply@...

You can either email the replies or send the document back as an attachment. For the few people Dirk has listed who do not have email a form will be given to them personally.

Do be aware that Tim has set this email address up TEMPORARILY & SOLELY for the handling of the responses to keep his and the Bodhicharya email account free of lots of messages and it will be deleted once he has processed all the information.

May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes

May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes

May all sentient beings not be separated from sorrow less bliss

May all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free of bias, attachment and anger

DISCLAIMER:  Please be 100% certain and rest safely in the knowledge that the information you provide will only be used for the purpose of piloting the Safety Net Project and will not be used for any purpose other than that.

Please try to get a reply back by end of March 2009

Thanks for reading,

Tim & Cesare

A Precious Human Life
We have bigger houses, but smaller families; more conveniences, but
less time.
We have more degrees but less sense; more knowledge, but less
judgements; more experts, but more problems; more medicines, but less
healthiness. We've been all the way to the moon and back, but have
trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbour.
We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more
copies than ever, but have less communication.
We have become long on quantity, but short on quality.
These are times of fast foods, but slow digestion; tall man, but short
of character; steep profits but shallow relationships.
It is time when is much in the window but nothing in the room.

with his Holiness Karmapa. We requested a long life prayer for Ringu
Tulku, which His Holiness gave us at the end of the teachings, it is
very beautiful...... please share it with all Bodhicharya members.

'The most peaceful essence of clear light,
Arisen as the changeless form of illusion,
Free from any sign of age and decay,
May he live forever as the Buddha of long life'.

Requested by Bodhicharya students from Ireland, Germany and UK.
Composed by His Holiness Karmapa at Tergar Monastery Bodhgaya, January

When Our Meditation Seems to Go Wrong

Summary: Summary: After a strong meditation experience, a student finds herself struggling.

A student writes:

"For some months I have been going along doing about 20 -35 minutes daily meditation. On holiday, my meditation seemed to go very deep. But now back home suddenly my meditation is like a huge effort and my mind so full of rubbish, full of nonsense thoughts, impossible for me not to keep constantly getting carried along with them. So irritated and dissatisfied so much of the time! If feel back at the whole start of the process again."

Lama Shenpen replies:

Yes, that is how we all experience the path. It seems the more we practice the more we notice how much of the time we are not! Noticing that kind of thing is practice actually. Before we just went along with all that thinking that was just life, then we experience something more genuine and real and it highlights the rest as rubbish. But it is important not to just treat it as rubbish. Every bit of rubbish is a jewel.

Whatever is happening is a Dharma opportunity, however bad and negative it seems. Once we have noticed it, the transformation process has begun. It often seems that we are back at square one but that is because reality is right here in every experience. It is like a gate. We keep stepping in and out. When we are in a good space it seems like that is all there is and always will be and when we step out it seems like to get back into the space is a huge effort.

It is as if there are guardians around the gate telling us it’s all much too difficult to step out again. But actually it is a lie. It is actually easy to step right back into the space of the path to Awakening. The problem is our habit of believing it is hard. We believe the voice that says this is all some kind of big deal and that we have regressed and that we cannot stop and wake up even for a few moments. So when you catch that lie, just stop for a few moments and see. Just see if it really is that difficult or not. Just allow a short gap and just see ... what bubbles up when you do that?

The student continues:

"I felt that my good meditation experiences on holiday were a luxury and only achieved because I had torn myself away from my normal life. Now my breath seems to come and go into such a small, confined space, and I cannot get any sense of a larger space, only this little claustrophobic space around me."

Lama Shenpen responds:

That is because you are approaching it with some kind of anxiety. The important thing is to approach it fresh as if you had never experienced space before—just gently wondering what it could mean—as if you had no idea at all.

Gently explore that little claustrophobic space. How big is it actually? Three feet all round? Or just in front? Above? Then what? What is the other side of that boundary? What is that boundary in fact? Is it inside or outside? Are you sure it is such a tight space? Or is it a feeling? Turn towards the feeling and be gentle and interested in how it relates to space.

Just keep wondering in a gentle and interested way

Arya Tara (Jetson Drolma in Tibetan) is one of the most cherished deities in Tibetan Buddhism renowned for her real presence and swiftness in helping practitioners. She is the manifestation of fully enlilghtened activity arising from pure compassionate wisdom energy in female form and is said to be the mother of all Buddhas

One can easily feel close to Tara's divine nurturing presence and let her radiance fill your body and mind while contemplating her openly and reciting her mantra

Dear Friends
Maggie and myself are planning to take a walk on Southampton Common, with malas swinging and hitting the airwaves with the melody of Tara's mantra.
We welcome your company on this New Year's day and supplicating Tara and her energies of removing fear and obstacles

We have chosen a Tara dedicated walk following on from Margaret Ford's inspiring email of making offerings of Tara mantras to Rinpoche and all beings for Losar

We plan to meet at the Cowherds Pub, on the Avenue, at 11am. Will keep you posted as to weather etc

Love and Prayers
Margaret and Maggie

Arya Tara (Jetson Drolma in Tibetan) is one of the most cherished deities in Tibetan Buddhism renowned for her real presence and swiftness in helping practitioners. She is the manifestation of fully enlilghtened activity arising from pure compassionate wisdom energy in female form and is said to be the mother of all Buddhas

One can easily feel close to Tara's divine nurturing presence and let her radiance fill your body and mind while contemplating her openly and reciting her mantra

OM TARE TUTTARE TURE SOHA
OM To the transcendent subduer, Arya Tara. I prostrate.
Homage to the glorious one who frees with TARA.
With TUTTARE you calm all fears,
You bestow all success with TURE,
To the sound of SOHA, I pay great homage

Dear friends,
I asked Ringu Tulku if there is any practice or prayers that would be helpful for him and the Bodhicharya mandala. He told me that he had also asked this recently of one of his Lamas and he had been advised to perform 100,000 Tara praises. He said it would therefore be good if all his students and sangha could recite as many Tara mantras as possible before the end of the Tibetan new year.

The tibetan year ends on 25th January 2009(please correct me if I am wrong) and the Tara mantra is as below this email. I would be grateful if all of you could please join us in reciting the mantra as much as possible. Please keep a count of your recitations and let me have your number of mantras either every week, or as often as you please, until or by 25th January 2009,  I'll keep a record for everyone.  I'll then let Rinpoche know how many mantras we have accomplished together by Losar. It will be our New year gift to him and each other.

As you recite the mantra please think of a positive and compassionate energy coming from your heart and surrounding Rinpoche and all of us, whether as Bodhicharya centres or groups or individuals, think of this positive and loving energy field expanding and reaching out to all beings, and dedicate all merit  for the benefit of all.

I hope this is clear, but if anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to hear from you.

Please pass this on to all of Ringu Tulku's students and friends.

with love and thanks and best wishes,
Margaret Ford

Hello Margaret,

This afternoon we got a message from Berlin that our website is infected by a worm. Its name is "Win32/Allaple Gen Worm" ( there are various other names for it)
I suppose the files on our server in the Netherlands are infected. I just wrote a mail to where our site is hosted.

Perhaps you can send a message to as many people as possible _not to open_ the site for a while. Clients who don't have a good antivirus-program will be infected.

Many thanks
Love
Bernhard
