Thanks Dave,
It is definitely Beal, Yorkshire, they were christened in Kellington,
which i believe is next door to you?
Looking at street maps, there is a Manor Lane which tails off at the
end, this does suggest that there was a Manor House at some time, maybe
it was already falling down when they lived there?!!
If you could give me the contact details for the local library, where i
could find any information, it would be a great help especially when i
finally get round to visiting the area

Dawn,
I can't do much to help you I'm afraid. There is a Manor Cottage here
in Beal (N Yorks). I don't know the people who live there though. I did
a quick Google and there is a Manor House in Beal (Northumberland).

Hello from Rochdale!
i've been researching my family history and have found out that my
Great Grandfather came from Beal. He was born there in 1851 and
although i have many names and dates and one day intend to visit, there
is a little mystery. On the 1861 census he is recorded as living in
The Manor House with his younger sister and 2 Aunts, no one else is
recorded as living there and the Aunts don't appear to be working
there, as they were the daughters of the local blacksmith and
unmarried, such an address seems a bit upmarket! can anyone shed any
light on this for me?

John William Reynolds b. 1851
Sarah Ann Reynolds b. 1856
Maria Barnes b. 1816
Ann Barnes b. 1818

congratulations to our parish council for maintaining for yet our
third position in the league of all the parishes in the Selby District
for the highest precept charge. our parish council talk of inviting
Birkin to amalgamate with us. If the people of Birkin decide to join,
then let the villagers know that where in previous years they pay
little or no precept, this year for those on band D would have had to
pay an extra £63 on thier Council Tax Bill.

are we as ratepayers getting value for the money we pay in council
tax, for the amount that we are asked for in the precept set by Beal
Parish Council. Are you aware that this the budget for 2007/08 has
been set at £16,000 but when I studied the proposed accounts to enable
the 'council' arrive at this sum, it amazed me that out of the total
£16,000 budgeted, £2ooo was a reserved amount to cover expenses for
conferences etc, but alarmingly the bill for salaries and
administration amounts to approx £12,000. Is there any justification
that we should spend some 75% of the councils income in this way. At
thefebruary council meeting (tuesday 7th) it was decided that after
the forthcoming local elections in May, that the new council proceed
too examine the possibility of them becoming a'Quality Council' giving
them even more powers over the usage of our council tax.
It is their intention to arrange a public meeting to sound out the
reaction of parishioners of this proposal.
Keep your eyes peeled, and dont miss going to the public meeting when
it is called, so that the wishes of the parish can be truly heard.

It is not installed as yet as we are still waiting for a meeting to
decide what options are possible.

I heard only last night that we aim to have a meeting this week at
some point about this so I'll know more then. As soon as I know a date
I'll let anyone interested know so that they can attend.

Cheers,

Trevor.

The competition was intended for Beal and Kellingley and the judging
was performed as such.

A few houses in Kellingley did make the final. Sorry if the
impression was that is was held in Beal only, this was clearly not
the intent of the competition or how it was judged.

Certainly I think a lot of houses in Kellingley did know this as the
decorations were superb throughout the entire are.

Well done to all participants - can't wait for next years. We will
make the rules a little clearer.

Cheers,

Trevor.

I'm happy to help out where ever possible and will definately make the meeting so long as I get a bit of notice and it's not a Monday Night ( Football Training ).....

A major part of my job is building IT networks in warehouses and offices, so I can tell you what products are out there and what they can do.

Based on the discussions so far, can I assume what we require is,

Trevor,
I'm happy to get involved if I can. I'm a bit out of touch with the
world of Broadband. I used to work in BT selling to government in
the days when they were pushing regional development agencies
towards broadband aggregation so there would be a demand to get the
exchanges upgraded (and pay for it). I don't know what sort of deals
they are offering to remote communities like ours these days. NYCC
went with some unknown supplier (MTT?) to put microwave broadband
into their premises. If I remember correctly, Kellington Primary was
due to get it in 2002. Did it happen? If so, is it bigger than 2Mb?
As for firewall and concurrent users, on busy evenings I'm presently
fighting my wife and two kids for a share of my 56k modem and my
annual subscriptions to Norton add up to nearly £100. Four more
households like mine and your 20 sessions are all gone. Offer me a
decent firewall and I can put the money I'll save buying Norton
towards subscribing to the service.
If we are likely to be in regular correspondance about this do you
want to do it outside this discussion group? Either emails me at
dwaller@... or come and knock on the door at a reasonable
hour.

Dave

We plan to hold a meeting about this in April.

package are usually tied in anyway and will wait to see if the project

2). Upgradeable connection - for the reasons just stated.

3). Wireless network for remote access - a must.

4). A subscription service to cover costs. We would like to keep these
down to a minimum though and will be applying for every grant possible
to benefit residents.

5). Software administration, as suggested a central firewall and spam
and anti vrus filter, parental control monitors etc.

6). Internal connectivity (for the Internet Cafe). Will require
wireless modems etc.

Is this a good starting point or is there anything I have missed.

A solution to this, would be to manage the connection via MAC Address. Only approved users could access the wireless network if their Mac Address has been entered into the routers allowed list.

I can't get 512kb off BT. I tried over a year ago but the line quality
just wasn't good enough. It took a month to get my internet access
sorted out afterwards so I'm a bit un-keen to try again until the
technology improves.
If we can dial into the Hall connection we'll have to watch out how
many concurrent users use the service. No point in having a 2Mb line
if there are 50 of us sucking data out of it at the same time.

This will certainly be something that we will discuss with BT when we
install the line. I will certainly be proposing that residents can
dial in to use the services at the village hall.

The whole point about this is to provide a service for residents of
Beal and it is something I will be stressing. We do now have a grant
to action this, so I will keep you posted about developments as soon
as I know.

In the meantime - I realise we can now get broadband at 512 Mbit
speed but has anyone tried the onspeed service for browsing. I
installed it last month and I am not kidding it works a treat.

It cost £23 a year and increases dialup and broadband connections by
up to 5 times by some compression technology with images. It means
the images are slightly fuzzy, but 99% of the time you only want the
information. If you are after quality images it is great because you
can search through the images 5 times faster - when you do find an
image that you really do want to examine in high resolution simply
turn the onspeed service off and you get a full resolution picture
downloaded.

I was very skeptical when I saw this at first - but I have to admit
it does what it claims and has improved browsing speed no end.

Obviously it does not assist a network connection for accessing a
private network - but it is worth considering for taking the pain out
of browsing using a dial up speed for the cost of a typical 6 weeks
broadband subscription.

Cheers,

Trevor.

The latest parish newsletter mentions a forthcoming broadband
connection to the Parish Hall. Is there any chance that it will be
something wireless that we can link into from home?
If not, how will the cyber-cafe be run and can I move in on a semi-
permanent basis to work from the Hall?
