Finally a replacement for the good old tungsten GLS lamp is starting
to
appear in high street shops and supermarkets. Obviously, I had to
purchase one to investigate Osram's claims that "...high quality of
light and energy savings are no longer mutually exclusive". One of my
criticism of CFL energy saving lamps has always been the poor quality
of light emitted. Yes they are very efficient, yes they are bright...
but there is far more to lighting than just big, bright and cheap.
The
main problem I have is that line spectra output from a CFL is no
substitute for the natural continuous spectra a tungsten lamp emits.
Even the apparent colour temperature is different, despite
manufacturers claims. Naturally I was very sceptical about Osram's
halogen energy saving lamps.

These lamps are available in a range of shapes and powers including
28W
(40W GLS), 42W (60W GLS) and 70W (100W GLS). I decided to re-lamp one
of my 4 wall lights with the 28W Classic A frosted as these lights
are
on a dimmer switch. The Osram HES performed in every way identically
to
the 40W GLS lamps in the other three fittings. I would go as far as
saying that if some else swapped the HES to another fitting I would
not
notice. The only difference I could find between the HES and a
standard
GLS lamp was the energy usage.

Overall the Osram HES gets a thumbs up!

Does anyone know what lamp a Pattern 93 burns? I know it was designed
for an A1 class, 1000W P40 base. I'm guessing it's an A1/11.

I bought two sets of lights from my local garden centre just before
Christmas. They are really beautiful but, perhaps rather stupidly, I
joined the two sets together. Now they are not nearly so bright and I
wondered if anyone could tell me why. The thing I really liked about
them was that they were much brighter than most Christmas lights. I'm
not an electrician and can't work out why the brightness would change
just because I have joined them.

Any advice would be great as my wife is really upset. They were her
favourite lights!

Thanks

Vince

Parts of Sydney where plunged into darkness this weekend in an effort
to raise awareness of climate change. We all take electricity for
granted, often with no consideration towards the impact power
generation has on the environment.
