Well on my e28 all you need to do is press a button on the side of back rest level with your shoulder,that allows you to adjust the head rest it should...

Another possibility the fuel outlet on the top of the tank, the rubber gasket can fail causing the fuel to spill over.. there is a access cover in the boot...
