last week had a coolant hose that broke...lost all coolant but luckily
pulled over and had car towed and got problem fixed.

A week later, went out of town which required some low speeds on trail
at camp (5 miles or so of driving). Later that day, car would not
engage and gears starting slipping and soon car would barely move.
Reverse worked fine though. Had car towed and repair shop says
transmission and drive shaft needs replacement. Is this feasable?

Any ideas? Second opinions? Ideas on getting it fixed cheapily (parts,
etc)?

Many thanks,

SACH

Is this a question about using M5 parts on a 535is or about upgrading
the suspension that came on US M5's?

Euro-spec M5's are a different thing altogether.

Anyone need a good set of track tires ? I have a set of 4 Yokohama AVS in
205-60-15 with 4-5/32” of tread left. Not enough for a long trip this summer
so I took them off. Best offer if interested
Also have the original TRX spare tire that has never been on the
ground….except when I took it out and put a new 15” spare wheel in this last
week…. Any interest in this?? Or is this a wasted effort…any Concour people
out there….?

Nathan's in Georgia, USA. Our e28's were all the Lux edition, with
monotone leather in most cars. Two tone was not offered here.

Good advise on the heater and control arm bushings, easy items to replace.

Our bumpers were alloy and we had the e28 through 1988, the best years
are '86, '87, & '88 here.

Nathan,

You can buy a very nice 535i or 535is for $4000.00 or slightly less,
that's what I'd look for. Try to find one that has original paint in
good condition because that will mean it's mostly been garaged which
will in turn mean that it's unlikely to have rust issues. I recommend
a 5-speed transmission, the auto trannies of the time were nothing to
write home about and frequently need rebuilds.

With the extra money you'll have you can do a few enhancements to your
car. I installed the M-tech suspension on my 535is, the one that we
should have gotten in the US had it not been for our ridiculous bumper
height restrictions. I have M5 stabilizer bars to go on it, a 3.64
limited slip diff, and BMW factory e39 wheels in 8x17 too.
Unfortunately, mine will need a paint job to deal with the "dead"
finish it has now.

Good luck in your search.

Pat H.

Look for a lux version

it has all the extras whichever model you go for lux is the one

late models are best 86 - 87

make sure it does not have metric wheels

check for corrosion around the rear subframe mounts

feel for wheel vibration braking at 50 mph +

check the air heater doesnt make a terriable noise

check bumpers and chrome for holes corrosion dents difficult to obtain spares

look carefully at interiors many high mileges will show on the seats

look for one like mine with the 2 tone interior black and pearl beige,.
rather than just black black black

most lux versions have this 2 tone

they also all have front fog lights and sports well tinted glass as shown
here

Look for shadow line de chromed trim.

look carefully in boot for corrosio around the rear wings and slam panel
where boot sits

best of luck hope this helps

Hello everyone,

I'm fairly new to this group, but have previously enjoyed owning a
1980 e21 and I'm now looking to upgrade to a bigger car that I'll be
able to keep once I have children.

I'm looking for an e28 that I plan to autocross occasionaly. I love
the 80's BMWs because they are such a blast to drive and the driver
isn't isolated from the driving experience. Plus those cars had yet
to start adding all sorts of bells and whistles I don't want or
need, thus keeping the weight down.

I have about $6,000 or $7,000 to spend and was wondering wether I'd
be better off buying a car for about $4 or 5k and putting work into
it, or just buying one for $6 or $7k. I'm more partial to the 535
than the 528.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking to buy in
early October.

Somebody might have said it so far, but the main difficulty I had with the L-jet
was the rpm and crank position sensors.  Tested old ones for resistance and
found I guess corrosion or age had compounded the problem.  Replaced sensors and
had no problem.  At first choked on price but found Facet, an Italian Co.
produced an alternative sensor that worked just as well.  Good Luck!

Thanks for your help, Gil. I have replaced the brake bomb about 6 months
ago, because I thought the brake pedal was lacking a bit of 'vacuum
assist' (I know this system isn't the same as other makes but it felt
that way to me). The brake bomb didn't make any difference and I assumed
that was just how the brakes were meant to feel. I also tried what you
said. The brake lights stay on as normal and I can pump the pedal until
the car nearly stalls (the problem) without the lights failing. Also, if
I pump up the pedal and then start the car, the pedal does go down,
albeit a small amount compared to a vacuum assisted car. I think I may
change the master cylinder this weekend and see if this fixes the
problem. I think long-term I will be looking at fitting the Megasquirt I
have in the shed also.

Hello Richard,

From the idling issue to the brakes.  Before you answer me, go out to the
car and start it up.  Take note, when you depress the brake pedal does the brake
light go on briefly then goes out?  If so the brake bomb is due to be replaced.
The car will stop as it should but the brake pedal with feel funny.  The purpose
for this brake accumulator is when the engine inadvertently stalls, you have
some vacuum store for a few pumps to get the car to a stop.  I have done mine
twice in the 8 years that I owned my e28.  You can do that job yourself at
home.  The next thing come to mind is a faulty master cyl,  some weird things
happen there too.  I had the front right caliper lock up from time to time and
would not unlock unless things cool down or I bleed that caliper on the road.  I
you have some high mileage, I believe it would be a good idea to replace that as
well.  This is also something you can do at home.  If you have Bentley manual,
that will get you started.  If I can do it you can do it.  I then 8 years that
I owned my e28, I have been able to correct the issues without taking it to a
garage.  Keep in touch.

Thanks Gil, the engine has good vacuum and will stall straight away
when the dipstick is pulled. Got my wife to pump the brake pedal while
I listened and there is a definite vacuum leak coming from the master
cylinder, corresponding with the engine losing vacuum. I am now
thinking the pressure from the brake bomb is leaking back through the
master cylinder, but I'm still not sure why this is causing the engine
to lose vacuum. Maybe the engine isn't losing vacuum, just the power
steering pump is having to work overtime to compensate for the air
loss when the brake pedal is applied and it is placing too much load
on the engine, causing it to drop in revs? Keep the ideas flowing..

This will cause the problem you have described. A new one is less

Hello, Start to check or replace the vacuum hoses.  I had found a few cracked
or broken and replaced with new ones.  A common culprit is the bellows tube that
connects the air filter to the intake.  This a common problem with cracking that
allows air to enter the system.  This will cause the problem you have

Have a problem with my '82 E28 528i (Euro RH drive). The idle has been
really erratic lately, have tried just about every idle problem cure I
know with these L-Jets and the problem remains. I have finally traced
it down to the brake pedal. Strange, yes? If the car is idling and I
pump the brake pedal, the idle gets worse and worse until eventually
(after about 10 pumps) it stalls. It seems like a vacuum problem to
me, as the L-jet requires a near total vacuum seal or it won't run
well ie. if you remove the oil cap with the engine idling, it will
stall. I can't seem to find anywhere on the engine for a vacuum
connection to the brake system. Remember, the R/H drive model has a
different brake booster arrangement to the L/H drive model.
Any ideas???

Excellent to know. Thank you John. This weekend I'm going to tear the whole
thing apart and clean it all up. Hey John, once again much thanks for the info.
I'm a runner/messenger for a television show. We use our own cars for this
purpose. Production starts in August and my goal is to get this car in decent
running order before then. Your help and everyone's in the group is invaluable
to me! Great "Car"ma to all.
Take care,
Daniel Doss

Hello 'O blessed folken 'O mine own seeouul!

Yeah, I had that campaign too.  Take off the clip inside the reservoir along the
center stud and there is another cover below that.  Take off that cover(like
upside down bowl) and the filter will be below it.  I suggest replacement,
however, of the filter because there is contaminated oil in the system, having
done it's circulation for a time and creating the sludge that is on the filter
and not allowing the fluid to flow into the pump on the return side.  Whatever
you do, use the dexron to clean filter and refill w/ dexron.  Good enough? ha.

Good Luck,
John

Good morning John,
Hey, now that you mention it, over the weekend I tried to install a power
steering pump. I went to the local pick-a-part this weekend and pulled a brand
new looking pump off a 6 series. Even though it looked exactly the same it did
not work. The pump screamed bloody murder. I pumped the brakes and turned the
wheel to hopefully get the air out of the system. Unfortunately, this did not
work. I was forced to put the old pump back on. Now, it sounds worse. I went
back to do a little research and found that the pump does have filter. I'm going
to try cleaning that. Any advise??
Have a great day,
Daniel

I know I had to replace the fan clutch and it made a difference in
the temp. It was just slipping too much. The old one lost fluid at
the front through the...viscous coupling?

Any thing happens with that thing and I can probably give you

would become pressurized and fluid would start to leak out of the

problem. When the system started overheating a helpful mechanic
bypassed the main cooling fan so that the secondary fan, the one in
front of the radiator, would constantly run. The mechanic who did the
work yesterday didn't realize this. After discovering this, I
reconnected the cooling fans leads to the sensor on the radiator. The
fan clutch kicked in and began to cool the engine. From what I could
see the pressure was relieved from the system. Hopefully, things will
remain this way. I'll post those pics soon.

wheel to hopefully get the air out of the system. Unfortunately, this did not
work. I was forced to put the old pump back on. Now, it sounds worse. I went
back to do a little research and found that the pump does have filter. I'm going
to try cleaning that. Any advise??
Have a great day,

If those are all from the master cylinder, than
they're all available. First
go to www.realoem.com and find the part numbers, then
decide if can afford
new, or if there exists a rebuild kit (e.g.
fcpgroton).

I went to the local pick-a-part this weekend and pulled a brand

not work. The pump screamed bloody murder. I pumped the brakes and turned the

Hello,  Had you replaced the filter first there would have been no need to
rebuild the pump.  I did the same thing rebuilding the pump.  The filter is at
the very bottom of the PS reservoir.  That filter is less then $20.00 US.

bmw e28 - a place to discuss all things bmw especially e28's
Daniel,

I rebuilt the pump on my 85 535i. Kit was cheap, it includes allthe gaskets and
the vanes that slide in and out on the spinning pump shaft togenerate the
pumping action. I rebuilt the hoses at a hydraulic hose rebuildingshop, using
the original fittings. Worked fine, no leaks.
