There's an interesting programme on radio 4 this week - "the battle
fro birth":

"The UK's maternal mortality rate is one of the worst in the developed
world. Most births occur in hospital, and around a quarter of them are
by Caesarean section. Many women want a perfect birth and some are
disappointed by the experience. In some parts of the country midwives
and doctors do not have a good relationship.

Penny Marshall looks back at the key decisions that have been made
over the last century that have produced the maternity services in the
NHS today."

Hi, just thought I'd let everyone know about a couple of baby-
friendly exercise options in the area:

1) There is a women-only jazz dance class on Mondays 10:30am at the
Colombo Centre, right next door to the doctors surgery on Colombo
Street near Southwark tube. You can bring babies into the hall -
they just sit around the edge so you can attend to them if needed, or
just let them be entertained by the other toddlers shaking toy cars
at them. And it's only £1... The teacher is a professional dancer
and it was quite a good workout. The Colombo Centre... well it ain't
Cannons, a bit scruffy but it's v friendly and well-organised.

2) Yoga in the evenings at Globe House just at the top of Bermondsey
St. They have classes (for adults) at 8pm each evening. Not
strictly a baby activity, but it's such a convenient post-bedtime
slot. I haven't added these into the calendar but the details are
all at http://www.globehouse.org/

Hope of some use... any others I would love to hear about.

Hi,

I have added a new table to the database section of the group in case
anyone wants/wants to get rid of anything...
I don't think I can make it so that you can put pictures with it, but
you could upload pictures on the photos part of the group...

Dear all,

There is a file on weaning and recipes in the 'Files' section. I was thinking
of creating a
database of recipes and tips. Please send me any recipes and tips you might
have and I'll
add them to the database. Especially important would be personal experiences of
weaning
- i.e. delayed weaning, finger foods (when and how), slow weaners or in the case
of my
son now - the magic none eater who survives on fresh air but still continues to
grow!!! I
think personal experience is the best thing we can offer each other - as no baby
is the
same and no book can cover every eventuality.

The topic headings I'm going to create are the following so please send them to
me within
these groups s I can easily add them to the database:
Recipes - including age suitability
Early Weaning Tips - personal opinions
1 Year Plus Weaning Tips - personal opinions
Experinece of Slower Weaners

Sorry about the deluge of e-mails but my husband is taking care of my son so
trying to do
everything all at once!

I was wondering if anyone had used a local babysitter they would
recommend? We need to find someone local and I'm not sure where to
start looking - other than go via one of the online agencies which
would make the whole experience quite costly! So, if anyone has a

Hello all

I have used a few babysitters in SE1.

I contacted Zoe on the TNRA website. She is very good and always
available but quite shy.

I can also reccommend Amber who lives on Bermondsey street. She is a
medical student so has slightly less availability but she is very
mature and I felt like I could completely rely on her. She has a car
so gets herself home.

My current babysitter is Hanifa. She lives just off Tower Bridge Road
and has a 4 year old of her own. I am 100% confident with her and
often leave her with my one and two year old to put to bed. I just
had a new born so am not using her much at the mo as we are not out
much, so you can borrow her but i want her back when i start going
out again! Her mother is also lovely and does my cleaning and she has
babysat for me too.Hanifa's number is 079613074. I also drive her
home or get her a cab.

Hope that this helps, remember Hanifa is just on loan if you want to
use her!

Hello everyone

I thought that I would post on here to introduce myself. I hope that
is ok etiquette, I am only just getting the hang of these yahoo
group things.

I live in Brockham street just off trinity church square. I have
lived in the area for about 7 years but have been away for about a
year whilst our house was renovated.

I am now back in Brockham street and have 3 children under 3. I am
just beginning to feel human again after the arrival of my third
last month and so am venturing out to various groups in the area.

This seems like a great forum and a good place to find out what is
going on.

Please excuse the hello baby user name, that is to do with my new
company (birth pools) which I have started since chucking in the
corporate grind!

Anyway looking forward to meeting you.

Hiya All!

I am a local mum-to-be and have been meaning to drop a note to
introduce myself since I joined the group. I did consider that I
might better off waiting till things progressed and I became more
confident that I had less to worry about…..but I have a feeling that
worry-free day may be a few years off yet !

So to introductions….
My husband (Peter) and I live in Merrick Square having lived in
Trinity Church Square for the previous 3 years. We're from all-over,
but the "family friendly" feeling of the neighbourhood has tempted us
to stay on and make this wonderful corner of London our home.

We are expecting our first (!) child and I will be 20 weeks pregnant
this week (half way- yipee!). Neither of us have much in the way of
family or friends who have been through childbirth recently, so it
all feels very new and exciting- and also, a bit daunting. However,
we were so excited to hear about the launch of Borough Babies in
recent TNRA newsletters – and we have been looking forward to meeting
the Borough Babies when our newbie arrives.

In the meantime I was wondering if :
• Any of you have tips on local facilities or services for
expectant mothers?
• Have any insight into local NCT services, and the value of
joining their ante-natal groups (instead of the NHS)?
• Have any pointers for consideration on planning to go to
the birthing unit at St Thomas?

It would be good to hear back from you (either via the website, or my
personal email below), whatever your experience- and also if you are
expecting too!

Just founded a very interesting article in the Time on the subjects :

From the website www.biculturalfamily.org :

"Many parents ask us how they can best support their infants' language
development. The good news is that you are probably already doing it!

Researchers say to spend time snuggling, cuddling, talking, laughing
and playing with your infant! The sensory experiences of your baby
are what will help her pick up your language best!

To learn more about this, go to our homepage

Hello other Mums,

I joined the "wedge card revolution" 6 months ago and got so many
discounts (in SE1 included). Very often 10% discount. Read bellow if
you are interested.

The Wedge Card aims to revitalise local communities by offering
great discounts to customers using local shops and services.

Initially launched in Central London, Wedge is spreading across the
capital and out into other cities rapidly, and you'll find a range
of fantastic deals exclusive to Wedge Card holders in your local
shops. Whether you are buying clothes, books, getting your hair cut
or simply eating out, using a Wedge Card you'll be helping us and
also helping local businesses to prosper.

Wedge Cards costs just £20 and are valid for one year. Most card
holders find that they recoup the initial cost in just a few
purchases.

Why Am I promoting it? One because I love the idea, I saved a lot of
money thought it and also because I try to raise some money for the
NGO where I am currently working. We are working with extremely
destitute asylum seekers (http://jrsuk.net/ terrible website – we
are changing it!).

If you are interested in helping my NGO at the same time as getting
the Wedge card (it does not cost you more money to sign-up through
my link ) just click on the link bellow:
http://www.ncvo.biz/wedgecard/individuals.asp?RO=JRS01

If you are interested the card without helping my NGO just visit
www.wedgecard.co.uk. You will also find out what traders have signed
up to the scheme.

Have a great week,
marine

I hope it is ok to post an ad on here.

I have a 3 bed house and our tenants are moving out on 20 June. I was

I haven't.

Does anyone know someone that is looking for somewhere?

It is in John Maurice Close next to Elephant and looks like a
Brookside house. It has 2 doubles and a single/nursery and a great
garden and also parking and garage.

It is a very nice little house, we used to live there ourselves.

If you know anyone please let me know, it is £350 (ish) a week.

The aim of the group to provide a forum for local working parents to meet up.
It is open to everyone who is working part time, full time or freelance. It is
an opportunity to catch up with local parents in the area, often something
working parents miss out on once they are back at work.
We meet up for a couple of hours at someone's house or an agreed upon public
space once a month on a Saturday. You can arrive and leave when you wish and the
main event of the gathering is a chance for you to chat with other parents about
a whole host of things. For many working parents it is one of their only avenues
to openly discuss the state of their baby's nappies, the erratic sleep patterns
their little one has or their joys and frustrations of parenthood, to name a
few. We also share tips on local childcare options and local child friendly
events in the area.
	 Up Coming Meet Up dates:
June 2007 - SATURDAY 23RD 11.00-14.00 Tabard Gardens - meeting up at the
playground first and then to find a nice spot for a picknick lunch!
