Re: [Bournemouth Bus Station] Time Machine

My choice would be even earlier in the 50's as I recall the H & D Bristol's with
the
vertical radiators (never can remember the model number !) and the Royal Blues
(Bristol L6B with body by Beadle) with there unique luggage racks on the back
half of
the roof. As was mentioned earlier, The Sunbeam Trolleybus fleet was also
something
that has always stuck in my memory. Was a shame when they got rid of the
trolleys as
the new ones were so smooth and quiet. Then there was the little Bedford single
deckers as well as the Burlington bodied ones. I also used to see the Leyland
Titan
PD2/3 which were also a very familiar sight. I have to say that life around
Bournemouth Square in the 50's was so different than it is today. Just standing
there
and watching the buses and coaches go into the bus station is memories that I
will
never forget. (If you go to my homepage and click on Bournemouth buses you will
see
that I was able to photograph some of them in preservation back in 1988)
cheers

Maybe a little earlier - when the last trolley bus routes were still running.
But
weren't a lot of the Bournemouth Corporation buses Fleetlines? There was a
lovely
variety between the Corporation and H&D in the late 60's, various Leyland Titans
including full fronts and St Helens ones, the trolleys - some were only 8 years
old on
withdrawal:o( - and a pretty full range of Bristols - KSW, LD, FS, FL, FLF, LS,
MW,
RE - including the Sandbanks ferry cutaway rear single deckers. Then H&D had
the old
K driver trainer that was left idling all night in cold weather to use to tow
start
other buses as needed.

If you could revisit the bus station for just one day in history,
which day would that be?

My choice would be a summer's day in 1974, just as the NBC corporate
livery was displacing H&D green, but with a fascinating selection of
old Bristols still trundling round. And over at the Square there
would be masses of Atlanteans in yellow with maroon trim to choose
from...

Over to you!
