Our family spent summer holidays in Bournemouth in the early 60s,
coming down by steam train from Waterloo (often the Bournemouth
Belle). I vividly remember the excursions one could undertake from
Bournemouth bus station in those (mostly) hot summers. The 2 hour
trip by H&D bus to Weymouth was a regular favourite, as was the run
to Salisbury (jointly worked by H&D with W&D). We also used to do
trips to Southampton, Lymington and Shaftesbury, and of course the
longer distance excursions by the very comfortable H&D coaches to
exotic destinations such as Torquay, Seaton, Cheddar Gorge and
Bristol Zoo. I also remember the paddle steamer trips to Yarmouth and
Totland from Bournemouth Pier. At the end of these trips it was back
to the B&B in Wallisdown on one of those ancient yellow council
buses. Apart from trolley bus trips to Christchurch I also seem to
remember that Bournemouth council made its own ice cream, some of the
best I've ever tasted! Long gone happy days...
