- A moratorium on new one-way streets (without a cycle contra-flow) and a phased programme of removing existing one-way streets (to allow 2-way cycling)
- A significant and comprehensive expansion of cycle parking provision all over the city (and ensuring in new development - still not happening despite the policies in the Local Plan)
- Filling in the gaps of key parts of the cycle network (such as between Palace Pier and Victoria Gardens), Vogue Gyratory, links to Marina, etc. and sorting out problem areas such as Coombe Terrace (Lewes Road).

Brighton and Hove City Council is set to disregard the results of its own public consultation about plans for the city centre. Originally presented as including ‘improvements for cyclists’, the scheme offered a two-way cycle route at the Clock Tower and the continuation of two-way cycling in Ship Street. These options were supported by a majority of the public, far outstripping the alternatives. But papers due to be discussed at the first Environment Cabinet Member Meeting on Friday include recommendations by council officers to ignore these results. Instead, they are recommending other options, including one which was not even part of the consultation. If accepted, the Clock Tower cycle route will never be put in place, and Ship Street will be made one way.
The danger to pedestrians in North Street is from buses, and that’s why the council got money for improvements. But the proposed changes take no account of the difficulties cyclists face in this area, particularly since the Council closed North Street Quadrant, a decision which we wholeheartedly opposed.
Brighton and Hove is a Cycling Demonstration Town, and as such should be making cycling easier in the city centre, not more difficult. One way streets are never for the benefit of cyclists and will only cause problems for people trying to get from A to B.

Dear Tanya,
Re: North Street Mixed Priority Route Road Safety Scheme - Stage 2
On behalf of Bricycles and CTC, we wish to ask a question at the Environment Cabinet Member Committee on 4 July:
"As a mixed use priority scheme, how do the stated recommendations which are not based on the results of the consultation, improve cyclists’ safety at the Clock Tower or their mobility in Ship Street, in the light of Brighton & Hove's Cycling Demonstration Town status? "
I would be grateful for early confirmation that my question has been accepted. I will attend the meeting.
Please also confirm receipt of this email. [Lisa please confirm in Tanya's absence].
Regards
Dr Tony Green
