Hi Adam
Thanks for the draft on behalf of the forum. I'd be grateful if you could also
include reference to Sustrans' and BikeIt's suggestion to close Boyce's Street
as part of this scheme. This will greatly enhance the road environment of Middle
School who are keen and active participants in BikeIt.
For info. Re: Cycle audit - In my view the purpose of this should be to
determine the working details of the designs of these areas rather than to
decide if the cycle provision is required. The need for full and safe cycle
provision at these junctions is not negotiable. I saw Roger's mail and I have to
disagree - the clock tower junction is an appalling and intimidating junction
with a continual flow of buses and I echo Nick's sentiments about it, especially
on a dark winter night. I'm also unsure what cycle lane Roger is referring to
and would like to point out that at present right turns are illegal for Queens
Road to Western Road. It really needs addressing with a cycle friendly solution
otherwise Air Street will remain the cut through of choice.
So, in summary, I think the deferment we should be seeking is over the detail of
the solutions rather than the need for them.

Subject: [brightonhovecycleforum] Comment asap !
My draft response to Geoffrey Theobald for asap comment:
Environment Cabinet Member Meeting, Agenda Item 32, North Street MPR Road
Safety Scheme - Stage 2
The Council has just conducted a comprehensive consultation on this area but
the respondents' preferences, and those of the City Cycle Forum, on the key
areas: North Street Quadrant and Ship street, have been ignored. If a public
consultation has been carried out then surely the Council should make every
effort to abide by the results ?
The members of the City Cycle Forum main concerns are:
North Street Quadrant: The existing route going north from Western Road to
Queens road around the Clock Tower is hazardous to those cyclists
experienced enough to use it but it is a severe deterrent to all others who
mostly cycle along the pedestrianised and narrow Air Street. Opening North
Street Quadrant with similar design to what has been done so successfully in
New Road is a far better and safer option.
Going the other way from Queens Road to Western Road also needs immediate
action as there is also no reasonably direct and legal route for cyclists.
Ship Street: A clear majority of respondents wanted this closed to traffic
except for cyclists. If this is the consultation result then it is difficult
to understand why the Officer's recommendations are completely the opposite.
The City Cycle Forum requests the deferment of the decisions on North Street
Quadrant and Ship Street pending a full cycle audit for these areas. These
are both important routes for cyclists and key parts of the cycle network
and full consideration needs to be given to this.
