PUBLIC MEETING

WOMEN IN PRISON –

A CALL FOR ACTION

"The nature of women's custody in many of our prisons needs to be radically re-thought."

The government's report by Baroness Jean Corston provides
a blueprint for creating a system to meet the needs of women offenders and their families, and to reduce re-offending. Published a year ago, the report's recommendations were accepted by the government but have not
been funded or implemented.

The Corston Report found that:

o    nearly two-thirds of women in prison have a drug problem

o    the majority have experienced domestic violence or sexual abuse

o    at least 70% have mental health problems

o    18,000 children are separated from their mothers by imprisonment

Come and hear Jean Corston present her recommendations for a 'radical new approach', and how we can help put these into action.

Where?   Bristol Council House (Room 15), College Green, BS1 5TR

When?    Friday 27 June 2008

6.30 pm   Refreshments

7.00 pm   Talk followed by question and answer session

This event is promoted by Bristol Justice Network, Bristol Women's Forum and the Fawcett Society (Bristol Group)
