They used to vary the beds at random as far as I know. With the original pink and white cardboard boxed stuff, you could equally well get a quarter corner or a rectangle bed, or occasionally a figure of 8. It was never the thin vegetable beds with flowers.
I don't know about the later bagged and tagged stuff (cellophane bag with folded card top stapled to it).
