Congratulations, that is the first picture of Contarinia anthobia on the web, and it shows exactly what to look for. I shall hunt for it on the local hawthorns which are covered with blossom at the moment.

Trial run:- I've had a go at creating a photo album "Maggie's galls"
and have hopefully uploaded a pic. of Contarinia anthobia, that I found
on a local nature reserve. I opened one of the galls and it contained
4 larvae that I sent to Keith for verification. Not as good a pic as
yours!

Hi Carl, Don't forget that there are two possible gall causers doing this - see British Plant Galls - Redfern, Shirley & Bloxham, page 317. Check the colour...
