Possible gall on Myrica gale?
Hello all
I recently found what would appear to be 2 tiny galls on the leaves of
Bog Myrtle (Myrica gale). The 'gall'is <2mm in length and elliptical.
It is manifest as a slightly raised pustule on the underside of the
leaf towards the edge. It is light brown in colour and pubescent.
I have collected a specimen as I was hoping to key it out in Redfern
et al's book, however there is no entry for Myrica and no other
members of the Myricacea family native to the UK (Rose, 2006).
I have not yet dissected the specimen as I only took one sample and
thought it best to attempt to breed it out, hence I am not yet 100%
convinced that it is a true gall. I will look for other specimens for
dissection in the hope of finding larvae.
Has anyone in the group encountered this possible gall before? Any
info would be greatly appreciated.

I would like to make contact with anyone who holds gall records for
Surrey (V17). The Surrey Wildlife Trust Atlas project hopes to map the
distribution of oak galls in a volume entitled 'The Oak Galls of
Surrey'. There are also plans afoot to produce a checklist of all gall
causers in Surrey (simply presence or absence). Please contact me if
you are able to provide any records.
