New records for Andricus aries in the Netherlands!!!
Now this is exiting, for
Dutch people at least…
Last Sunday 19th of
November 2006 I found many specimen of Ram's Horn Gall (Andricus aries) in the
Thijssepark (www.thijssepark.nl) and
the Amsterdamse Bos in Amsterdam!!
Untill now only one place
in the Netherlands was known
for Andricus aries, on a small
oak in the Diemerpark (also near Amsterdam),
discovered in Spring 2003. In
the Thijssepark I checked most of the oak trees and shrubs present and I found
galls on three small and large shrubs of oak. On a seedling oak 40 cm high) ten galls (see
picture below) where present. They did not seem to be parasitized, since they
where slender and had long 'horns' (?). On the other (larger and older) shrubs
in the park the galls were nearly all very stubby and extra thickened at the
base. These galls were probably parasitized by other wasps. It is also possible
the elder oak trees have better resistance to galling parasites like Andricus aries, and the galls are not able
to develop to a healthy state. Several of the galls on the older shrubs hadn’t
emerged and probably never will. I would like to know if anyone can tell me
more about this?!
In the Amsterdamse Bos
('Wood of Amsterdam') I found galls of Andricus aries on two (average) large
oak trees. These galls were also stubby and extra thick at the base.
It is interesting that it
is soooo easy to find specimen in the Amsterdam area (if you look of course) and
I suspect Andricus aries has been
around for a long time already. I have asked people in the Netherlands to
pay attention to this species, so maybe I can tell you more soon!

Dear all, as some of you know I am VERY interested in the spread of alien cynipids on oak, and I read the message of JoJanneke with interest. Last spring I was...
Hello Karsten I will send you my records, and any others that I unearth, during the course of my research for Surrey's galls. I have certainly recorded all...
Scotty, much appreciated. Chimeras are fascinating, but they give me a headache to think how the gall formation mechanism might work if it can produce results...
Karsten, You mentioned that Andricus aries possibly preads with 20 km a year. That sounds very fast! I would love to see the figures 1 and 2. Could you sent...
Jojanneke, the figures are on the website under photos>>Karstens images... Cheers Karsten ================================== Dr. Karsten Schonrogge Associate...

Hello again Maggie I have uploaded a couple of Rachels Bayeriola pics. As you can see the gall is rather striking in colour and little or no flowering spike is...
Hi Scotty, Thanks for the pics - the galls are so noticeable - I can't imagine that I'd have missed them if they had been present in the garden - but I'll...
