RE: [British Expats in Malta] Re: Move to Malta

Hi Dave-
I have a 3-bedroomed villa with pool and garden and average mid-year
5-month utility bills are in the region of LM190 – however this
fluctuates depending on rentals/occupants. Also one has to take into
consideration this year’s edition of the Good News Bible i.e. the
budget, which has slapped a subsidy on electricity bills (explanations
for it and its rate vary depending on which politician is at the
podium). So far no municipality taxes are levied. But I reckon that’s in
the pending tray.
My average weekly food bill is about LM 10-15 (for 2) – I buy my veggies
and fruits exclusively from the veggie trucks.
For eating out I recommend the Definitive(ly) Good Guide – for a
standard “local” i.e.pasta meal out, average cost is LM.7-8 p/p. Fish is
not cheap here (eg. Lampuki or swordfish: LM5.-6). But that may be
cheaper than in the UK.
I recommend the following restaurants:
Papparazzi – Spinola Bay
Il-Cave – Valletta (next to Castille Palace)
Trattoria Palazz – Valletta (Cordina Piazza)
Jubilee bar/café – Valletta (near Manoel Theatre)
Tra Buxu – very good wine bar in Valletta
Il-Mithna – Mellieha
Aqua Pazza – Marsaxlokk
Lord Nelson – Mosta………………lots more but cant recall at the mo…

To find good maltese cuisine-i.e. rabbit stew/ rabbit with potatoes/
rabbit with quail/quail without rabbit/ etc etc… is like a hunt for the
holy grail (sorry am suddenly seeing a pun in there….the Monty Python
rabbit attacks). You need to find small restaurants in the “coontry”,
like up in Mjarr.

Don’t know of any boats websites but you could start enquiring at all
the marine supply outlets up in St.Paul’s Bay (where most of the diving
schools are located) and down near the Gzira and Msida marinas. Also,
for personal ads, there’s a very good monthly newspaper called Telesales
or something – will check for you if you wish – in which everyone lists
anything they want to sell.
All the best
caroline

Hi Dave,
if you ask 10 people for advice you will most probably get 10
different answers.
I suggest you contact Mr. J. Mizzi of the
Citizenship and Expatriate affairs at the Office of the Prime
Minister. His email is joseph.mizzi@...
Opening a diving school shouldn't be a problem but it is subject
to permits from the Malta Tourist Authority. If they feel that the
market is saturated you will not be given a permit to operate.
Same goes to your wife, I am sure she will get a permit, again
subject to a permit from the Medical Association that the market
is not saturated.
I also suggest you contact Dr.Italo Ellul. email:legal@...
His studio can guide you on the legal and tax matters.
For renting or buying a property make sure you communicate with
Mr. R. Mallia email: romal@...
His portfolio of properties is very vast and also exclusive. He is a
professional and transparent agent and he would go out of his way
in helping you settle here in Malta.

Regards,
isolano
