Re: [British Expats in Malta] Moving to Malta

Even though Malta's in EU you still need to get a work permit which is issued
after you've found a job and you cant work before its issued. All bureaucratic
red tape but not unique to Malta. If you're an EU citizen you can't be refused a
work permit, but once you find a job your employer needs to sign your permit
application and give you a letter stating your job description and terms of
employment. Permits are issued by the employment and training corporation
(www.etc.gov.mt) , who will also ask for passport size photos and a copy of your
cv. Permits cost 25 Maltese Liri a year. After that you have to get a NI/social
security number and pay contributions (proof of this is asked for when the
permit is up for renewal). Contact the ETC at the link above for more details.
Job hunting's much the same as anywhere else, and there's no harm in sending out
spec CV's. Depending what line of work you're in/want to do has more bearing on
how successful you may be finding a job. Being a small
island, finding work in media/marketing may be more difficult than UK, and
don't expect salaries anywhere near the same range. Online betting is a growing
market in Malta at the moment, and although another language is usually asked
for (at the moment particularly Russian,German and Scandinavian languages)
previous experience and excellent English may be enough. Italian isn't very
commonly asked for as an employment pre-requisite, and although Maltese isn't
always essential, spoken Malti goes a long way to making life easier all round.
Plenty of places around teaching Maltese but as for prices and how good they are
I can't give you info.
Hope this helps for starters - I've been living in Malta for 8 years now, and
loving every minute if it.
Good Luck
FF

Hi All,

My fiancee and I are keen to move out of the UK and Malta as a
potential destination has been mentioned. We're going to have a
reccy mission in March to scope out good areas to live/ job
situations etc but I came across this group and you all seem rather
helpful so I thought I'd try to get some tips.

We are both British - do we need work permits? The information on
the websites I have been browsing is a little confusing - I thought
we were all a big EU happy family that could come and go as we
pleased!

What is the recruitment etiquette there? We're hoping to get our
CVs off to the recruitment agencies we have found, but is it also OK
to send speculative CVs to companies? I saw a post on this site
saying that it can be quite hard to find employment. I currently
work in a media/ marketing agency and my fiancee has worked for an
online betting site for many years - are these the kinds of jobs
reserved for the Maltese people? I'm all for a change but it would
be nice to know what sort of direction we should be looking in.

I'm ashamed to say we don't really speak another language (apart
from a bit of school French/ German). Is it essential to speak
fluent Maltese to have a hope of finding employment? Should we take
courses in Maltese/ Italian before we even think about moving? One
of the aims of moving abroad is to learn new languages - are there
good language schools and are courses reasonably priced?

Rather a long message, but any help gratefully received..

Thanks,

Helen
