Re: [British Expats in Malta] Moving to Malta - link corrected

Just a suggestion before you make your final decision. Try and spend at least 3
months out here, winter time I think will either make or break you. Its much
colder in winter than you imagine. The houses act like sponges and feel very
cold, in fact its often warmer outside than in. People say its the humidity but
most of the time it is more humid in the UK, its the composition of the houses.
Life I personally feel is quite hard here especially for the women. People are
so friendly, welcoming and generous. The problem is trying to get anything done
whether it be by a large or small organisation. I often say that the national
anthem or song should be the well known song by Boyzone "Tomorrow Never Comes"
as they always say tomorrow it will be done, they will call tomorrow and it
never comes or rarely comes. My husband however is not as concerned about things
as I, he is so happy, its a mans world !!!!!!
I also would say rent not buy a property, rents are a pretty good price and if
you have your own property in the UK keep it just in case and if you wish to
rent it out that could help boost your income. Eating out is great value for
money here and is pretty cheap to live. Its a big decision. Its a bit like
Shakespeare "to go or not to go, that is the question" or "to be or not to be"
Best of Luck

Bill,

It sounds like you are planning to retire in Malta. You can do that as a
temporary resident and you might be better off that way. The Permanent Resident
scheme is really only an advantage if you have a heavily taxed income, and can
be disadvantageous to retired people. You can find a detailed discussion about
this here: http://britishexpat.com/expatforum/country/viewtopic.php?viewtopic.

All the best,

Tim

My wife and I are very keen to move to Malta on a "Permanent Recidence" basis
and so any info on members experiences with regard to this would be most
welcome. We did live and work in Malta between 1964 and 1968 and loved it. Our
last visit was in the summer of 1981. We have lived and worked abroard for more
than 30 years so have no problem with the concept of living abroard.
